CELESTE
I watched the color drain from Elizabeth’s face, watched her mouth open and close like a fish gasping for air, and I felt a small flicker of satisfaction flicker through my chest. Julian was still on his knees, his arms wrapped around my waist, his face pressed against my stomach, but I felt his grip loosen slightly as he registered the tension in the room, the sudden shift in the air that told him something was very wrong.
“Celeste, what are you talking about?” Julian asked, his voice muffled against my dress, his eyes looking up at me with confusion and suspicion warring across his features.
But before I could respond, Elizabeth snapped back to life, her voice sharp and brittle like glass about to shatter. “Stop changing the topic! This is about you cheating on your husband. Julian caught you red handed and you still have the tierves to act so high and mighty.
Julian, stop begging this tramp. Once Dominic Ford finally dumps her, she will come crawling back. By then, I would have already gotten you the best woman in the world. A woman befitting of your status. A woman who would always remember her place and not try to boss over everyone.”
“No,” Julian snapped at his mother, his voice cutting through her tirade like a blade. “Stop provoking my wife.”
He turned to me, his eyes desperate and pleading, his hands gripping my waist even tighter. “Please, do not listen to her words. I have already asked her and Riley to leave. Celeste, it will be just the two of us and I will make you love me again,bI promise.”
I looked down at him, at the man who had spent months cheating on me in hotel rooms and resorts while I sat at home waiting for him, at the man who had ignored every need I had until another man stepped in to fulfill them, and I felt nothing. Not anger. Not sadness. Just a deep and resounding emptiness where all the love I had once felt used to live.
“Let go of me,” I said.
“No.”
“Let go of me, Julian.”
“I will not.”
I struggled against his grip, trying to pry his fingers away from my waist, but he held on with a desperate strength, his arms like iron bands around me, refusing to release me no matter how hard I pushed and pulled. His fingers dug into my sides, his nails biting through the fabric of my top, and I could feel the trembling in his hands, the shaking of a man who was watching his world collapse and could not accept it.
Left with no other choice, I raised my voice and called out, “Guards! Help me!”
The front door burst open and the two men in black suits stormed into the living room, their movements quick and efficient, their faces impassive. They grabbed Julian by the shoulders, pulling him away from me with a force that made him stumble and fall backward onto the floor. He landed hard, his palms scraping against the floor, and he looked up at me with a helpless expression on his face, his eyes wet and red, his mouth open like he was about to say something but the words would not come.
