Too Late To Love Me I Already Left With His Twins (Lydia and Dave) novel Chapter 8

Her

Lydia POV

So this was the woman.

This was why my husband had stood outside our house on our wedding day and delivered his little “this is a marriage of convenience” speech like he was reading company policy.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because suddenly, things were making sense so quickly it was insulting.

Cyn turned then and walked toward the living room like she had just remembered I still existed.

I didn’t move.

She stopped near the sofa and looked down at the television.

A romantic scene was still paused on screen.

Her lip curled.

Then, without asking, she picked up the remote from the side table and changed the channel.

Just like that.

No “excuse me.

No “do you mind.”

Nothing.

She flipped from my drama to some fashion network as if my presence in the room was a clerical error.

I looked at the television.

Then at her.

Then back at the television.

There are some forms of disrespect so absurd that they move past anger and land directly in disbelief.

This was one of them.

For one dangerous second, I almost said something.

Something sharp.

Something satisfying.

Something that would have probably escalated this into a scene Bernard would later have to recover from spiritually.

But then I stopped myself.

Not because I was scared.

Because I was not yet ready to show this woman where my temper lived.

And more importantly,

I wanted to understand the game before I started playing.

So instead, I stood.

Cyn glanced at me briefly, already bored.

I smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Just enough to be unnerving.

“Enjoy,” I said.

Then I walked away.

Not fast.

Not angrily.

Just calmly enough to let her know she had not chased me.

Even though, technically, she had.

I could feel her eyes on my back as I left the living room.

And I hated that I could.

The house felt different after that. 1

Smaller somehow.

Not in size.

In peace.

Like the walls had shifted and revealed cracks I had not noticed before.

By evening, Cyn was still there.

Still moving around like she had history in every hallway.

Still speaking to Bernard with irritating familiarity.

Still throwing me those little glances every now and then like she was waiting for me to break first.

She finally left just before sunset.

I only knew because I heard her voice near the front door.

Bright.

Sweet. 1

Pelse.

Don’t worry,” she said to someone on the phone, laughing softly. “I’ll tell my baby everything that’s happening in his house.

I stopped halfway down the corridor.

My fingers tightened around the stair rail.

Everything that’s happening in his house?

I stood there, listening to the click of her heels fade away.

Then the front door shut.

And for a long moment, I didn’t move.

Because suddenly, for the first time since I got married, I felt it clearly.

This marriage was not empty.

It was occupied. 1

And I had a very uncomfortable feeling that whatever peace I had managed to build in the last three weeks had just expired. 1

A whole week passed. 1

And Cyn did not step foot in the house again.

If I hadn’t watched her walk into Dave’s room like she had a key to his lungs, I would have convinced myself I imagined the entire thing.

But I didn’t imagine it.

I remembered the way she’d called him my baby like it belonged in her mouth.

I remembered the way Bernard had gone tense around her.

I remembered the way she had looked at me like I was a temporary stain on expensive furniture.

Good evening, ma’am.”

I stared at him.
