Dave POV
Immediately I saw Lydia’s picture, time stood still.
I’m sure this sounds like one of those cheesy lines from movies, but time literally stood still.
Everything just… paused.
Not the room. Not the city outside.
Me.
It was so bad that I didn’t even notice when Sera quietly excused herself and left the office.
One minute she was there. 1
The next, it was just me.
And that picture.
I don’t even know which shocked me more.
Was it the fact that she’s doing so well? 1
Or the fact that she has been this close to me all along?
Five years.
Same industry.
Same circles.
Same conversations happening in rooms I’ve probably been in.
And I didn’t know.
I leaned back slowly in my chair, still staring at the closed file like it might open itself again.
Like if I gave it enough time, it would explain something.
Anything.
But it didn’t.
Of course it didn’t.
I ran my hand over my face once.
Slow.
“Interesting,” I muttered to myself.
Because that was the safest word I could use.
Not accurate.
But safe.

My chest felt… tight.
