Coming
Lydia pov
Tanswered.
“Hello?”
“Lydia.”
His voice sounded amused.
“How do I remove blush from a child’s face?”
I blinked.
“What?”
“Miriam.”
I glanced at my kids in the back seat.
“She told me she doesn’t want to wash her face because she likes your lipstick.”
I laughed.
“It’s blush, Theo.”
“Whatever it is, it’s apparently precious.”
“It is.”
“I figured that out.”
I could hear the smile in his voice.
“She says she doesn’t want it to come off.”
“Use a wet wipe.”
“A wet wipe?”
“Yes. A normal baby wipe. Just gently clean her face.”
“Where do I find one?”
I laughed.
“Are you serious?”
“I’ve been informed that I’m apparently useless in this department.”
“You can find baby wipes in literally every supermarket.”
“Excellent.”
There was a brief pause.
Then I heard Miriam’s voice in the background.

“Daddy!”
What?”
“Can I live with Lydia?”
I froze.
Theo went completely silent.
Then Miriam continued, apparently unaware that she had just detonated a bomb.
“I want her to be my mom.”
I covered my mouth.
The car went strangely quiet.
Even Ava and Eli had stopped talking.
Theo cleared his throat.
“Miriam…”
“But I like her.”
“I know.”
“I want to live with her and the twins.”
I could practically feel Theo’s embarrassment through the phone.
“I’m sorry, Lydia.”
I laughed softly.
“It’s okay.”
“She doesn’t mean-”
“I know.”
I said to Miriam.
“Princess, you can always come visit me. And my babies would love having you around.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Can I?”
“Of course.”
She sounded delighted.
“Okay!”
I smiled.

Something warm moved through me.
en my brain, apparently desperate to ruin everything pleasant, supplied one very dangerous thought.
What would it be like?
Having another little girl running through my house.
Hearing another small voice call for me.
Having Miriam reach for my hand the way my children did.
I blinked.
No.
Absolutely not.
Back to earth, Lydia.
I had enough children.
I had enough responsibilities.
I had enough chaos.
And I certainly did not need to start imagining things that had no business being imagined.
By the time we arrived home, the children had already begun preparing for Dave’s arrival.
They were checking the clock.
Checking the door.
Checking the time again.
I watched them from the staircase with a smile.
They had missed their father.
That much was obvious.
Around five, the house became strangely quiet.
Then the doorbell rang.
I already knew who it was.
I walked toward the entrance and opened the door.
And there he was.
