“She joined my company afterward and honestly?” Madam Eloise shook her head softly. “That girl transformed everything.”
Her voice carried genuine admiration now.
“The media worships me publicly, but Lydia has been carrying most of this company for years.’
That genuinely surprised me.
“She built campaigns people still study. She rebuilt reputations nobody else could save. She understands audience psychology instinctively.”
Then Madam Eloise looked directly at me.
“She became extraordinary exactly the way your grandmother predicted.
And for some reason-
that filled me with something painfully close to pride.
Madam Eloise noticed immediately too.
Interesting woman.
She smiled knowingly before continuing.
“So yes. I sent you the photographs.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to see what kind of man you would become after finally seeing what you lost.”
Silence.
Then softer now:
“And?”
“You came back.”
Madam Eloise adjusted slightly before continuing.
“But let me make something very clear to you, David.”
Nobody called me David anymore unless they intended seriousness.
“You are not rebuilding relationships right now.”
Nrowned slightly.
…What?”
“You are auditioning.”
That hit immediately.
