After Lydia told me to leave that day, I actually left.

No argument.

No pushing.

No trying to force another conversation she clearly did not want.

Honestly, after seeing Eli lying there pale and exhausted, after watching Lydia walk around looking like she had aged ten years in one morning, I did not even have the energy to fight anymore.

So I left quietly.

But the entire drive back to my hotel suite, I could not stop thinking about the birthday.

Their birthday.

Six years old.

Six years of first words, fevers, school runs, birthdays, nightmares, favorite cartoons, random obsessions, allergies apparently, and entire personalities developing without me.

God.

That thought alone could ruin an entire day if I allowed it.

So instead of spiraling emotionally like a normal person, I did what I always did whenever my emotions became too loud.

I worked.

Or at least I attempted to.

Because somehow every spreadsheet eventually turned into thoughts about Ava rolling her eyes or Eli asking questions that made absolutely no sense.

By evening, I gave up pretending I was concentrating and started sorting through the photos I had taken over the past few weeks with them.

And honestly?

Those children were chaos.

Pure chaos.

There were pictures of them arguing over board game rules like tiny divorced lawyers.

Pictures of Eli lying dramatically across Lydia’s living room floor after losing a puzzle challenge.

Pictures of Ava reading while ignoring everybody around her with the kind of concentration usually seen in surgeons and cult leaders.

One photo in particular made me laugh for almost a full minute. $1
