That night, a torrential downpour struck the city.
Julian didn't go home. Instead, he drove straight to Willow's current apartment complex and stood outside her building in the pouring rain all night.
His tailored suit was completely soaked through, his damp hair plastered to his forehead. His eyes were heavily bloodshot, making him look completely wretched and haggard from standing out in the cold rain.
He waited until dawn broke and the storm finally eased. At last, he saw two figures walking shoulder to shoulder out of the building.
Willow was wearing a simple, elegant beige knit dress, her expression soft and serene. Beside her, Silas was dressed in a bespoke black suit, his posture tall and commanding. He casually rested his hand on the small of her back. The atmosphere between them was so intimately happy that it instantly ignited a murderous rage inside Julian.
But he forcefully swallowed it down. He knew full well that he was in the wrong here. He had come to beg for forgiveness, and he couldn't afford to ruin the mood the second he opened his mouth.
Willow, of course, spotted him. She had been in a wonderful mood. Silas had just made her wontons for breakfast, and they were so delicious that they were discussing having them again tomorrow. The moment she glanced up and saw Julian standing there, her good mood evaporated.
Beside her, Silas's expression was no better. A layer of frost immediately blanketed his eyes, radiating extreme caution and disgust. Instinctively, he stepped slightly in front, firmly shielding Willow as he looked down at the pathetic, soaking-wet Julian.
Seeing Willow's gaze, Julian was struck by a cocktail of heartbreak and resentment. In a daze, he remembered the past. Back when they were younger, Willow's eyes used to be full of him. Her gaze was always soft and passionate, hiding a heart full of joy and cautious adoration. Whenever she looked at him, it was always with a tender smile, pure and sincere.
But now, those eyes that once overflowed with love held nothing but bone-chilling apathy and utter revulsion.
His heart felt like it was being crushed by a giant fist. The pain made it hard to breathe. Exhaling a shaky breath, he finally voiced the name he hadn't earned the right to say. "Willow."
The moment the word left his lips, a violent wave of nausea churned in Willow's stomach. Her face paled slightly, and her brows furrowed in discomfort.
Noticing her reaction, Silas immediately reached out and gently rubbed her back, asking softly, "What's wrong? Are you not feeling well? Do you want to go back and rest for a bit?"
Willow shook her head slightly, suppressing the urge to gag. "I'm fine. It just made me sick to my stomach hearing him call my name."
She hadn't spared Julian a single glance the entire time. "Let's go. Ignore him."
She immediately reached out and wrapped her hand around Silas's, her fingertips gently caressing his palm, giving him all the quiet reassurance he needed.
Then, she lifted her gaze to look at Julian. Her eyes were piercingly cold, her tone indifferent and impatient. "I don't have time to listen to this garbage. Move out of our way."
Her gaze was completely detached, as if she were looking at an annoying, irrelevant stranger on the street. There was no love, no hatred, no resentment—only absolute apathy.
This look completely shattered Julian's final psychological defense. A tearing, agonizing pain erupted in his chest.
Only at this very moment did he truly understand that he had permanently lost the girl whose heart and soul had once belonged entirely to him. And yet, only now did he realize how deeply he loved her. With tears welling in his eyes, Julian begged desperately once more. "Willow, I'm begging you, please give me one more chance to make this right. I've completely changed. From now on, I will devote my entire life to you, to make up for all the pain I caused you. Let's start over and build a good life together, please?"
"Build a good life together?" Hearing this, a chilling, mocking smirk spread across Silas's lips. His deep voice was like ice, mercilessly shattering Julian's delusions. "In what capacity do you plan on building a life with her? You'd better get this through your head, Julian. You and Willow signed the divorce papers. You have absolutely nothing to do with her anymore."
The word 'divorce' violently struck Julian's deepest nerve. He instantly lost control of his emotions, the hostility in his eyes exploding as he roared, "The divorce is all thanks to you! If you hadn't constantly plotted to drive a wedge between us and forced your way into our marriage, Willow and I would have never ended up divorced!"
