Chapter 611 Unraveling the Deception
Miranda was clearly upset, but after venting for a moment, she seemed to catch herself. She quickly turned to Riley, her tone softening. “But honey, don’t take any of this personally, okay? It’s just a play-none of it is real. Our family would never treat you like that.”
It dawned on Riley that Miranda had noticed the parallels between the plot and what she’d been through with the Ashfords. Worried Riley might be affected, Miranda was quick to reassure her.
That thoughtful, protective gesture touched Riley deeply.
She knew Miranda genuinely cared for her, like she was her own.
But Riley wasn’t the same fragile person she used to be anymore.
A gentle smile lifted the corners of her eyes.
She glanced at Sebastian beside her, then looked back at Miranda with a playful glint. “Don’t worry. I’m not one to just sit back and take it, either.
“If anyone ever tried to pull something like that on me, I’d give it right back to them-wouldn’t even let them get the last word.”
Watching the two of them get so caught up in their heartfelt exchange-even drifting into talk of payback-Sebastian, who’d been quiet for a while, finally cleared his throat softly to remind them he was still in the room.
He stepped closer, slipped an arm around Riley’s shoulders, and drew her gently toward him.
“No need to waste energy thinking about it. You’re never going to have a husband who’d let you down like that, anyway.”
Miranda shot her son a fond, slightly exasperated look.
By the time the four of them drove back to Torres Estate, it was already late into the night. Still, the main hall was brightly lit and filled with the murmur of conversation.
A number of relatives and guests who had returned earlier were gathered there chatting.
Even though Wayne had mentioned they’d be out late, word seemed to travel fast-almost as soon as their car pulled into the driveway, a small crowd began to gather.
Curious well-wishers approached, offering warm greetings and light conversation to Wayne,
Miranda, and Sebastian.
As Sebastian’s new wife, Riley naturally found herself in the spotlight-the center of attention in more ways than one.
She kept a polite, graceful smile on her face and handled each interaction with calm poise.
By the time the last of the guests had drifted away and they finally made it back to their own bedroom, the clock on the wall was inching toward two in the morning.
“I’m completely worn out…”
The moment the door closed behind them, Riley let her polished composure drop.
Her whole body felt heavy and spent. Too tired to even make it to the bed, she sank onto the sofa in an unceremonious heap and didn’t move a muscle.
