This so–called birth mother of hers never showed up unless there was trouble. Nine times out of ten, she’d messed something up and came running to their father to bail her out.

Their dad had barely made it through that horrible car accident. His body and mind were still healing.

The last thing he needed was Melissa bringing more drama and stress into his life–even if there was still some thin, fragile thread of a mother–daughter bond between them.

Riley’s expression turned cool as she gave her instructions.

“Put more security detail at the hospital. And remember–if my father hasn’t personally cleared her to visit, don’t let her through.

After sorting things out with Vincent, that restless, simmering feeling in her chest still hadn’t settled.

She stared at her phone for a moment. Something told her that guards and assistants wouldn’t be enough. When Melissa felt cornered, she could get desperate–and desperate people did reckless things.

So Riley called her brother Raymond directly. She wanted to warn him to stay alert and not give that woman an opening.

Raymond picked up quickly. But before Riley could even get her reminders out, he let out a tired sigh and said, “Actually, Mom didn’t go straight to the hospital yesterday. She showed up at the office first.”

Riley caught the tone right away. “What did she want? What’s going on?”

“What else? Her precious adopted daughter.” Raymond’s laugh was cold, his voice thick with disdain. “Sounds like Elsie’s gotten herself into some serious trouble. From what I heard, it’s bad enough that the Blackwoods are keeping their distance now–they won’t lift a finger to help her. And Elsie doesn’t exactly have the skills to clean up her own mess. Whatever savings she’s tucked away won’t be enough to fix this. She was desperate, so she thought of us. Came running to me for help.

“Elsie hasn’t been part of this family for years. She’s not even my real sister. I’d have to be out of my mind to play the fool for her. With everything going on at the company right now, I don’t have the time or the patience to deal with her drama. So I had my assistant brush her off–told her I was in a senior leadership meeting and couldn’t be disturbed.

“She could tell she wasn’t getting anywhere with me. She must’ve panicked, because next thing I knew, she was heading toward Dad’s hospital. But Riley, don’t worry–Dad’s still recovering, and I know what’s important. I’m not about to let her bother him. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the hospital security myself,”

Hearing that, Riley felt most of the tension leave her shoulders.

But after hanging up, she leaned back in her chair and gazed out the floor–to–ceiling windows at the overlapping rooftops of the old estate. Her thoughtful expression only deepened.

The Blackwoods had a decent reputation in Nexopolis. If this were just some minor scandal, there was no way they’d cut off their own daughter and wash their hands of her completely.

Whatever trouble Elsie had stirred up probably wasn’t simple. There might be more to it—something uglier beneath the surface

Sebastian had been watching her the whole time. The moment she asked, a faint, pieased smile touched his eyes.

He took it seriously. Right in front of her, he pulled out his phone, made a call, and gave clear, firm instructions with a stern tone.

After hanging up, he saw Riley return her focus to work and politely didn’t disturb her.

Around noon, he didn’t make her go, back to the main house to deal with the crowd. Instead, he had the housekeeper pack lunch into containers and bring it to where they were.
