Chapter Two Hundred Nine

After breakfast, Diana made her way to the guest wing of the pack house where Ravenna had been staying since arriving in Black Howler. Unlike the rest of the pack house, this hallway was peaceful and quiet. The sounds of warriors preparing for training, omegas organizing supplies, and pups laughing during the emergency drills faded into the background.
Diana paused outside Ravenna’s door and knocked gently.
A few moments later, the door opened.
“Luna Queen,” Ravenna greeted with a warm smile.
Diana smiled back.
“It’s Diana, Ravenna. May I come in?”
Ravenna laughed softly.
“Of course. You know this is your pack house. You are the Luna here. No one in this pack would ever dare tell you that you cannot enter one of its rooms.”
She stepped aside dramatically.
“In fact, if anyone did, I believe your Alpha King would throw them out of the window before you even had the chance.”
Diana laughed.
“I think you’re right.”
“Then please, come in.”
Ravenna opened the door wider, allowing Diana inside.
The room was simple but comfortable. Herbs hung from several wooden beams near the window, filling the room with a calming scent. Small bottles containing potions rested neatly on a nearby table beside several rolled parchments covered in ancient runes. Candles burned quietly in each corner of the room, their flames unusually still despite the breeze coming through the open window.
Diana immediately noticed another magical circle drawn near the bed,
“You’ve been working,” Diana observed.
Ravenna nodded.
“I never really stop.”
The two women settled into the small sitting area inside the suite.
Diana looked carefully at Ravenna.
“You look tired.”

Ravenna siniled knowingly.
~“So do you.”
They both laughed.

“I just wanted to check on you,” Diana admitted. “You didn’t come to the food hall this morning, and I wanted to make sure you were all right.”
“I am.”
Ravenna leaned back against the chair.
“I decided to remain here and focus on restoring my strength.”
She glanced toward the magical circle near the bed.
“The barrier surrounding Black Howler required an enormous amount of magic.”
Her hand instinctively rested on her swollen stomach.
“And the concealment spell protecting my baby consumes another large portion of my power every single day. I need to recover whatever magic I can before Thorne decides to make his move.”
Diana nodded thoughtfully.
“I was actually wondering about that.”
Ravenna looked up.
“About what?”
“Your concealment spell.”
Diana hesitated.
“I hope you don’t think I’m prying. I was simply curious. Why are you hiding your pregnancy? Wouldn’t it be easier to let everyone know?”
Ravenna’s smile slowly faded. Sadness filled her beautiful green eyes.
“I wish it were that simple.”
She gently rubbed her stomach.
“I have to protect my son.”
“Your son?”
Diana asked softly.
“So you already know it’s a boy?”
Ravenna nodded.
“White witches have certain gifts.”

She smiled faintly.
“Knowing the gender of our child is one of the few pleasant surprises our magic allows us.”
Diana smiled.
“A son. Congratulations.”
Ravenna returned the smile, though it never fully reached her eyes.
“He will become one of the most powerful witches of his generation.”
Diana raised an eyebrow.
“You sound certain.”
“I am.”
Ravenna looked lovingly at her stomach.
“He is the child of the strongest White Witch and the strongest Black Witch of this generation.”
She paused.
“He carries both bloodlines. He will inherit extraordinary magic.”
Diana smiled.
“I’m sure he’ll make both of his parents proud.”
For a moment, Ravenna remained silent. Then she whispered softly,
“I hope he survives long enough to do so.”
The room became quiet. Diana’s smile disappeared.
“What do you mean?”
Ravenna lowered her eyes.
“My son is…”
She swallowed.
“…my last legacy.”
Diana frowned deeply.
“Last legacy? What do you mean by that?”
Ravenna took a slow breath.
“You have to understand something, Diana.”
Her voice became calm.

“As the White Witch, it is my duty to stand beside the Silver Wolf. I will fight beside you. I will heal you. I will protect you. I will stand between you and Thorne if I have to.”
Diana immediately shook her head.
“No. You don’t have to-”
Ravenna gently raised a hand.
“Please. Let me finish.”
Diana fell silent.
“My duty was decided long before I was born. My mother carried it. My grandmother carried it. Every White Witch before me carried it. And now… it belongs to me.”
She smiled sadly.
“I know exactly what my responsibility is.”
Diana listened quietly.
“But I am also a mother.”
Ravenna’s hand remained over her stomach.
“And as a mother… my first instinct is to protect my child.”
She looked toward the magical runes surrounding the room.
“The concealment spell isn’t simply hiding my pregnancy. It is protecting him. I have poured nearly half of my own magic into the spell. So much that even if someone specifically searched for magical life inside me… They would find nothing.”
Diana looked surprised.
“Half your power?”
Ravenna nodded.
“Half.”
“That much?”
“Yes.”
Diana looked at her in disbelief.
“Wouldn’t that make you weaker?”
“It does. Considerably.”

“Then why would you-
Because if I fall…”
Ravenna interrupted gently.
“…my son must live.”
Diana’s breath caught. Ravenna continued quietly.
“The concealment spell has another purpose. If I die during the battle…”
Diana immediately frowned.
“Don’t say that.”
Ravenna smiled sadly.
“I have to. If I die… my body will still continue protecting him until he is born.”
Diana stared at her.

“My magic will not disappear. It will remain around him. It will hide him. It will protect him. And when the time comes… my people will find him. They will take him back to the coven. They will raise him. They will tell him about his parents.”
Ravenna smiled weakly.
“And hopefully… they will tell him I loved him.”
Silence filled the room. Diana’s eyes became watery.
“You’ve already planned your own death.”
Ravenna nodded slowly.
“I had to. I couldn’t prepare for only one possibility. I had to prepare for both.”
Diana reached across the table and took Ravenna’s hand.
“I don’t want you talking like that.”
Ravenna squeezed her hand gently.
“I don’t want it either. But I have lived with this possibility ever since I chose to stand beside you.”
She smiled sadly.
“You have your own survival strategy.”
Ravenna nodded.
“I do. As a White Witch… I fight for the Silver Wolf. As a mother… I fight for my son.”
She looked lovingly at her stomach.
