Chapter One Hundred Ninety Five

Talon entered their bedroom quietly and immediately found Diana lying on their bed. She had not even bothered to change out of the clothes she had worn in his office. She was lying on her side, one hand tucked beneath her cheek and the other resting unconsciously over her still-flat stomach.
For several moments, Talon simply stood near the doorway and looked at her. His mate. His Luna. The mother of his unborn pup. Even thinking those words made something warm spread through his chest. They were going to have a pup. He was going to be a father. And Diana-the female he loved more than his own life-was carrying a tiny piece of both of them inside her.
His happiness was almost overwhelming. But so was his worry. Now that he knew the truth, everything from the past few weeks suddenly made more sense. Diana’s exhaustion. The dizziness. The way she had needed more sleep after being poisoned.
The way Artemis had taken longer to remove the poison from their system. All this time, her body had been protecting their pup without either of them knowing it.
Talon moved closer to the bed. Very carefully, he sat down on the edge of the mattress, making sure not to disturb her. Diana barely moved. She only released a quiet breath and snuggled deeper into the pillow.
“Mate is tired,” Fenrir said softly inside their shared mind.
There was no usual impatience in his wolfs voice. Only concern. Talon reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from Diana’s face.
“Yes,” he answered. His thumb traced her cheek. “Even if she keeps telling us she is fine.”
Fenrir gave a low huff.
“She always says she is fine.”
Talon smiled faintly.
“That is because our mate is stubborn.”
“Our mate is strong.”
“She can be both.”
Fenrir did not argue with that. Talon continued looking at Diana. Her face looked peaceful while she slept. No worries. No battles.
No thoughts of Thorne. No feral rogues. No ancient curse hanging over her head. Just Diana. His mate.
Talon hated knowing that the moment she awakened, everything would return. The danger. The planning. The knowledge that Thorne now wanted her dead more than ever. And now there was their pup to consider as well.
“The nightly attacks have taken more from her than she realizes,” Talon murmured.
Fenrir shifted restlessly.

“We should have noticed.”
“Not even Artemis knew.”
“We are her mate.
“That does not make us all-knowing.”
Fenrir growled quietly.
“We should still have known.”
Talon understood his wolf’s guilt because he felt it too. They had fought beside Diana night after night. They had watched her exhaust herself defending the pack.
And because Diana always stood again, always smiled, always insisted that she was fine, Talon had allowed himself to believe her.

Now he knew her strength had been divided all along. Half of Artemis’s power protecting Diana. The other half protecting their child.
Talon’s gaze lowered toward her stomach. Still flat. Still giving no visible indication that their pup existed. His hand hovered over it.
He hesitated. Then very gently, almost reverently, he placed his palm against her abdomen. Nothing happened. Of course nothing happened. The pup was still too small for him to feel movement. But Talon’s chest tightened anyway.
“Hello, little one,” he whispered.
Fenrir immediately surged forward.
“Our pup.”
“Yes.”
“Tell pup we are strong.”
Talon almost laughed.
“I think our pup already knows.”
“Tell pup we will protect them.”
“That, I will.”
Talon leaned closer.
“You probably cannot hear me yet,” he whispered against Diana’s stomach, “but your father is here.”
A small smile appeared on his face.
“And so is Fenrir.”
Fenrir practically puffed his chest inside their shared mind.

Talon ignored that part.
“We will protect you”
His voice softened.
“And we will protect your mother, even when she makes our job incredibly difficult.”
Diana stirred faintly. Talon froze. But she did not wake. Fenrir immediately scolded him.
“You almost woke mate.”
“I was whispering.”
“You whispered loudly.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Be quiet.”
Talon shook his head. For once, he decided not to argue with his wolf.
“Let mate rest,” Fenrir said.

Talon looked toward the door. Originally, he had come here to wake Diana and take her to the healer. He still wanted the healer to examine her. Ravenna might be a powerful White Witch and might know more about Silver Wolves than anyone else alive, but Talon wanted confirmation from their own healer.
He wanted to know Diana was healthy. He wanted to hear the pup’s heartbeat if it was possible. He wanted to know how far along she was. He wanted every question answered.
But looking at Diana now… He could not bring himself to wake her.
“Yes,” Talon agreed quietly. “Let her sleep.”
Fenrir relaxed.
“The healer can wait.”
Talon slowly removed his boots.
“Exactly.”

Then he carefully climbed onto the bed beside Diana. He had intended only to lie beside her for a few minutes. Just until she woke naturally. He positioned himself behind her and gently wrapped one arm around her waist, resting his hand protectively over her stomach.
Diana immediately reacted even in sleep. She moved backward until her body rested completely against his chest. Talon smiled. His face settled near the curve of her neck, just beside the mating mark he had
left there. Her scent surrounded him. Home. Peace. Mate.
Fenrir practically purred.
