The Silver Wolf (Diana and Talon) novel Chapter 128

Chapter One Hundred Twenty Eight

Cla

Silence settled across Damon’s office. No one rushed to speak. No one interrupted. Because Damon’s words had landed heavier than anyone expected. Even Talon-who had spent most of his time around Damon looking for reasons to throw him out a window-stayed quiet. Willow sat completely still. Her eyes remained on Damon. On the male who had hurt her. The male who had taken her choices. The male who had frustrated her more times than she could count. But also- the male who was now sitting in front of her with no pride left between them. No excuses. No arrogance. No Rogue King. Just Damon. Just her mate.

Inside her, Winter stirred softly. “He means it.”

Willow frowned slightly. “You forgave him quickly.”

Her wolf huffed. “I did not say forgive him. But he means it.”

Willow looked away briefly. Because somehow-that was harder. Anger was easier. Anger protected. But sincerity? Sincerity made things complicated. Across from them, Diana glanced between Willow and Damon. Then her eyes narrowed slightly.

Because another thought had caught her attention.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked toward her. Diana slowly leaned forward.

“Say that again.”

Damon blinked.

“What part?”

Diana’s eyes sharpened.

“The part about a Silver Wolf choosing her mate.”

The room became still again.

Damon frowned slightly.

“That’s what the Oracle said.”

“No.”

Diana shook her head.

“I know what you said.”

Her fingers tapped lightly on the table.

“But it doesn’t make sense.”

Talon frowned.

What do you mean?”

Diana looked toward him.

“If Silver Wolves can choose their mates…” Her eyes darkened thoughtfully. “Then why didn’t Artemis tell me?”

Silence. Because that was true. Artemis had hidden. Protected. Prepared. Warned her. But never- not once had she mentioned anything about choosing mates. Inside her mind Artemis had gone completely still. Suspiciously still. Diana narrowed her eyes.

“Artemis.” Nothing. “Artemis.” Silence.

Talon slowly looked at her.

“… Why do I suddenly feel like your wolf knows something?”

Still nothing. Diana crossed her arms. “Artemis.”

A long pause. Then-

“…Maybe.”

Diana blinked.

“Maybe?”

Artemis sounded guilty. Very guilty.

“You knew?”

“I knew… a little.”

“A LITTLE?”

Diana nearly shouted. Everyone stared at her. Willow blinked. Talon looked alarmed.

“My love?”

Diana ignored him. Inside her mind-

“You knew this whole time?!”

Artemis immediately defended herself.

“I DID NOT KNOW EVERYTHING!”

Diana stared ahead in disbelief.

“You hid it.”

“I hid many things.”

“That is not helping!”

Talon slowly raised a hand.

Should I be worried?”

Diana slowly looked toward him.

“No.” Then paused. Maybe”

Talon stared.

“Maybe?!”

Clum

Willow suddenly snorted. Conall looked away suspiciously. Damon looked like he was trying very hard not to smile. Talon narrowed his eyes.

“Why is everyone finding this amusing?”

Diana sighed dramatically.

“Apparently Artemis knew something.”

Now Talon looked offended. “She knew and did not tell us?”

Inside Diana’s head Artemis immediately growled.

“Excuse me? We hid from everyone for years. And if I remember correctly…”

Artemis sounded smug now.

“… that sorry excuse of a Luna, Hazel, was flirting with you, while you are trying to get close to us.”

Talon froze. Complete silence. Damon suddenly looked very interested. Willow blinked. Conall looked ready for drama. Talon stared at Diana. Diana stared at Talon. Very slowly-dangerously- she smiled. Oh?”

Talon pointed accusingly at the ceiling.

“That wolf talks too much.”

“She learned from you.”

“I have never-”

“Talon.”

His mouth immediately closed. Willow pressed her lips together. Damon suddenly coughed. It sounded suspiciously like laughter.

Talon glared.

“Do you wish to die?”

“No,” Damon answered immediately.

Though his shoulders shook slightly. Diana shook her head. Then her expression slowly turned serious again. Because despite the momentary lightness- there were still questions. Too many questions.

“If Artemis knew something,” Diana said quietly, “then maybe the Oracle wasn’t completely wrong.”

Silence returned.

Damon frowned.

“You think Silver Wolves really can choose?”

Diana looked uncertain.

“I don’t know.”

Talon immediately looked offended again.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“No?”

“No.”

His answer was immediate. Absolute. Final. Fenrir practically snarled through him.

“Our mate is ours.”

Diana sighed.

“Talon-”

Cism

“No.”

“Talon-”

“No.”

Diana rubbed her forehead.

“You are not even listening.”

“Yes I am.”

“No you aren’t.”

“Yes I am.”

Willow smiled slightly. Conall looked down. Damon finally lost his battle and laughed. Talon glared again.

“You are becoming very brave today.”

Damon grinned.

“I think I am safe.”

“Why?”

Damon looked toward Diana.

“Because Luna Queen Diana will stop you.”

Talon looked betrayed.

“My own mate.”

Diana looked innocent.

“I have no idea what he means.”

Liar.

Artemis said immediately.
