"Did you really think I'd walk into a trap holding the only thing keeping me alive?" Charles scoffs, his gaze cutting through her. "Before we get to that, tell me—is the person pulling your strings the head of the organization?"
Right on cue, a slow, deliberate set of footsteps echoes against the concrete. A figure steps out from the shadows.
When Charles gets a clear look at the man's face, his eyes narrow in dangerous recognition.
"Gregory Sinclair. I should have known."
"Since you already guessed, why drag us all the way out here to play games?" Gregory replies, adjusting his tailored coat.
He looks every inch the refined, harmless scholar. No one in Capital City's elite circles would ever suspect that beneath this polished, gentlemanly facade lies a ruthless, bloodthirsty psychopath.
"I'm here now. Hand over the item," Gregory demands smoothly.
"Do you honestly think I'm naive enough to believe you're the top of the food chain?" Charles fires back with a humorless laugh. "You take orders too."
Gregory sighs, spreading his hands in a show of exaggerated innocence. "You asked Jovani to introduce you to her boss. You didn't ask to climb the entire corporate ladder. Don't be difficult, Charles."
"And what about Garrett's children?" Charles roars. "His youngest son, Gavin, was born a prodigy. Look at the traumatized shell he is today! Did you have a hand in that too? You preach about serving the nation and pushing the boundaries of progress, but your idea of progress is butchering innocent people in underground labs!"
Charles's blood boils. Real progress is built on hard work and intellect, not on the corpses of unwilling test subjects.
"You're making some wild accusations, Charles," Gregory replies calmly, waving a dismissive hand. "Gavin was traumatized by losing his parents so young. The Sinclair family has done nothing but try to heal him. We just hate to see brilliant minds wasted. Our only goal is to ensure a stronger future for everyone."
The man is a pathological liar, spinning atrocities into patriotism without blinking.
