Chapter 458

I watch as it rings. His name flashes on my cellphone screen, but I don’t have the heart to answer. I look away, swallowing the bile rising in my throat.
The night has passed, folding into another, allowing arrangements to be made, my womb to be completely removed so I can save my brain.
It’s a hard decision, one I don’t want to dwell on. Too much thought will only make me realize how much I am proving those who call me barren right.
I try to focus on the TV show, the sound of running water filling the background. Sera has stayed over to take care of me, ensuring I am comfortable. She’s in the bathroom now.
I sigh, attempting to clear my head, when my cellphone rings again. This time, I expect Cupid, but the saved name on the screen reads “Dad,” with a full moon emoji beside it, my way of distinguishing him.
I pause, staring to be sure I’m not imagining it. My biological father is calling. I sit up straight, clear my throat, and answer, wondering why he would call. The last time we met, things ended badly.
“Dad?”
Silence stretches from his end. Long. Heavy. Then a groan escapes him, as if he didn’t even want to make the call.
“You sounded hale and healthy. Why did Grant sound so worried and alarmed?” he asks irritably. “Uhh, humans. He said you need some surgery, either womb or head. I guess Ares is right about you needing mental healing. You should Focus on being healthy/Stop worrying your human family. Your existence in their lives… it’s such a pain. Bye.”
He disconnects immediately. I remain frozen, a cold chill running down my spine. The bitter bile rises. again, tasting sour on my tongue.
“Be careful, Dove…”
Eshan’s voice comes from the hallway, followed by rushing footsteps. The door bursts open, and my best friend enters the ward, eyes wide with awe. I swallow, wondering who told her I was here.
“Snow…” she calls, clutching a paper bag as she makes her way toward me, reaching for my hand. “Snow.”
I pull her into a hug. She holds me tight, unrelenting. After a while, she pulls back, sighing shakily.
“I had to terrorize your brother to find out where you were, since you wouldn’t tell me. My mom was worried, my sisters too. Mom made you a meal, and I brought some clothes. I’m staying until you fully heal. I asked for a few days off work, and…”
“Dove.” I call, and she jolts, literally shaking. Our eyes meet, and I see it, she knows. My brother must have informed her.
Dove has always been more family than friend. Her mother has long been on the Frost payroll. Even the

I lower my gaze, nodding in agreement. There’s nothing I could say that would make her decide otherwise.

“Yeah. I should thank your mother for her kindness,” I murmur, reaching for my cellphone when the door opens again. My father walks in with Roc

es… he was… polite. Told me to focus on healing.”
My father nods, sighing in relief. Then, the bathroom door opens, and Sera walks out, her hair still damp. She bows before my father.
“She’s lying. Alpha Herold said she should stop being a burden to all of you Frosts,” Sera says, and I look at her in disbelief. She glances away. “I know he’s your biological father, but… who could remain unmoved hearing his daughter can never have children?”
Silence falls, heavier now. Saying it aloud makes it even more chilling. I lower my gaze, forcing myself to
