The distinction left me without an answer I wanted to give him, and he seemed to know better than to push because he moved on.

“Mason said there was no chance you’d actually come.”

“Mason says a lot of stupid things.”

“He gave it twenty percent.”

“Generous.”

“I gave it forty.”

“Your faith in me is overwhelming.”

His grin faded when I didn’t return it. “Sunday by seven.”

“I know what time dinner is.”

“Just making sure.”

“Anything else?”

Lucas took the dismissal and stood. “I’ll tell Mom you confirmed.”

“She already knows.”

“She’ll still want to hear it.”

He had nearly reached the door when I called him back.

“Don’t tell Dad.”

Lucas turned, the remaining amusement disappearing from his face. “He’ll be there.”

“I know.”

“Then what difference does it make?”

“I don’t want him knowing I’m coming until I walk through the door.”

He watched me long enough that I knew there were questions he wanted to ask, but whatever he saw convinced him to keep them to himself.

“Okay”

Once he was gone, I returned to work and managed to keep my attention there for the rest of the afternoon. Calls gave way to meetings and revised figures until, sometime after six, I finished the last Vantage review and reached for my jacket.

My phone lit up beside me.

After checking the fucking thing for Luna twice already today, I had no intention of doing it again for another email, but the screen remained illuminated long enough for a familiar name to catch my eye.

Luna.

Four days of silence, and now she had decided to reappear.

I picked up the phone and opened her message, whatever intention I’d had of leaving disappearing as I read it once and went back to the beginning.

By the time the screen dimmed in my hand, my jacket remained forgotten beside me.

Tuesday was no longer the only thing I was waiting for.

The message contained five words.

LUNA: You’ve been suspiciously quiet.

Four days without a word, and she was accusing me of being quiet.

ME: That’s interesting coming from you.

Her reply arrived almost immediately.

LUNA: I’ve been busy.

ME: So have I.

The typing indicator appeared, vanished, then returned before another message came through.

LUNA: And yet you replied in thirty seconds.

Little shit.

ME: Don’t get excited.

LUNA: Too late.

The laugh that threatened caught me off guard enough to remind me that I was still standing behind my desk having a conversation I could easily have ended several messages ago.

I took my jacket from the chair without ending it.

ME: What do you want?

Her answer took longer this time.

LUNA: Maybe I just wanted to say hi.

My fingers tightened slightly around the jacket. There was nothing remarkable about the message, but I read it once more before pulling the jacket on.

ME: Hi.

LUNA: Wow. Look at you.

ME: Don’t ruin it.

LUNA: I wouldn’t dream of it.

I left the office with my phone still in hand. Most of the executive floor had emptied for the evening, leaving only a handful of offices illuminated beyond the glass partitions. Claire’s desk was vacant, and nobody crossed my path before I reached the private elevators.
