The world seemed to narrow to the space between them.
Caleb did not move.
He did not breathe.
Only his eyes changed – darkening, sharpening, becoming something ancient and unreadable.
“You are… what?” he asked, each syllable precise.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Iva swallowed, her throat painfully dry.
“The Messenger,” she whispered.
The reaction was instantaneous.
Power exploded outward from him.

Not anger alone – authority. Bloodline. Command. Something far older than dominance and far heavier than rage. His aura surged like a crushing tide, slamming into her chest, forcing the air from her lungs.
Her vision blurred.
Her body folded involuntarily, collapsing onto the bench as if gravity itself had increased.
Breath would not come.
Her ribs screamed under invisible pressure.
Avalon howled inside her mind.
Hold on-hold on-
Caleb watched her.
Not cruelly.
But without mercy.
A test.
A judgment.
Just when the edges of her vision began to darken completely, the pressure vanished.
Air tore into her lungs in a ragged gasp.
She bent forward, trembling violently, clutching the edge of the bench as her body tried to remember how to breathe.

His voice came again – quieter, colder.
“Are you certain,” he asked, “you do not wish to reconsider your answer?”
Her entire body shook
Her heart pounded so violently she thought it might fracture her ribs from within.
Fear unlike anything she had known flooded her system – deeper than when she fled her pack, deeper than when she rejected the bond, deeper than standing alone in a world that wanted nothing from her.
Mate or not…
The man before her was terrifying.
“Why do we have this luck, Avalon…” she whispered inside her mind, her thoughts fractured by lingering panic.
Her wolf did not answer immediately.
When she did, her voice was steady.
“Because destiny does not choose the easy road.”
Iva lifted her head.
Her hands still trembled.
Her voice did not.
‘I am telling the truth,” she said hoarsely. “There must be a way to verify it… I presume.”
Caleb studied her for a long time.
Too long.
His gaze moved across her face, searching for deception, hesitation, weakness.
He found fear.
He found exhaustion.
He found resolve.
Finally, he spoke again.
“Let us assume,” he said slowly, “that you are not lying.”
A dangerous pause.
“Explain.”
His posture shifted – not relaxed, but contained. Controlled. Like a predator choosing to listen before deciding whether to strike.
“How,” he continued, “does a lone wolf discover she is the Messenger?”

“Start from the beginning.”
The weight of his attention was suffocating in a different way.
Not crushing.
Consuming.
Iva drew a careful breath, forcing her pulse to slow.
Then she began.

“It happened after my first shift,” she said quietly. “When my wolf awakened fully something changed. At first, I thought I was imagining things. I began seeing faint lines… threads… connecting certain wolves.”
Caleb did not interrupt.
“I thought it was stress,” she continued. “Trauma. Wishful thinking. But the threads reacted to proximity. To emotion. To recognition. They pulsed when two fated wolves were near each other.”
Her fingers unconsciously pressed against her chest where the bond glowed strongest.
“They are red,” she whispered. “Like living light. They connect directly from heart to heart. They move. They tighten. They respond.”
His eyes flicked briefly to the space between them, like trying to see the invisible line.
She continued.
“I did not understand what it meant… until I saw one connecting me.”
Her voice faltered.
“First to someone who rejected it,” she said softly.
She did not say Nick’s name.
She did not need to.
Caleb’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
“After the rejection,” she continued, “the ability grew stronger. Clearer. I could sense bonds even at distance. Feel their direction. Feel when they were strained… or severed.”
Her gaze dropped briefly to her hands.
“When I saw yours,” she whispered, “I knew what it meant immediately.”
