The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 99

The luxury van cruised quietly down the dark expanse of the highway.

Garnett sat in the back, staring blankly at the streetlights blurring past the window. He hadn't said a word in miles.

He had spent the last seven days on Marina Island aggressively investigating the woman named Zoey and trying to uncover exactly who she was working for.

He had met with her multiple times and sent fixers to dig into her background, but right when he was getting close to the truth, she vanished into thin air.

Sitting beside him, Sigrid studied his striking profile and softly asked, "Garnett, are we heading straight home? Do you want to go somewhere else for a drink? Your wife isn't home anyway, right?"

Garnett kept his eyes glued to the window, offering no immediate response.

Sigrid felt a sharp pang of disappointment.

Yes, he had abandoned his entire corporate empire and stayed with her on the island for seven days and seven nights just to deal with her house.

But during those seven days, even while staying in the same hotel, he had never once touched her. He hadn't even brushed her hand.

"Garnett, I..."

"Sigrid," he cut her off, still refusing to look her way. "I am a married man. Naturally, I am going home."

Sigrid froze, the words hitting her like a physical blow. It sounded like a warning, a deliberate redrawing of the boundaries between them.

He let out a nearly inaudible sigh, his tone flattening. "Don't worry. I will make sure you get your ancestral home back."

Sigrid lowered her eyes, swallowing her words.

The atmosphere in the car turned suffocatingly heavy. Sensing the tension, Corinne quickly chimed in from the rear seat. "Mr. Harper, should we keep investigating that Zoey woman?"

"Drop it. She's just a smokescreen," Garnett replied coldly. "Bypass her entirely. Find the original seller."

He paused.

"They signed the letter of intent just the night before. There's no way they had time to finalize the title transfer at the local registry. Which means the seller can still breach the contract."

Corinne hesitated. "A twenty-nine million dollar property will carry a massive penalty for breach of contract. We're looking at least ten million in damages..."

"I don't care what it costs. Get that house back," Garnett ordered icily.

Sigrid's heart fluttered. She looked at him again.

No matter how cold he acted, he was still moving mountains for her.

He was willing to throw millions at a house without blinking. Meanwhile, he only gave that girl a measly couple of grand a month for living expenses.

Her place in his heart was obvious.

She slid her fingers out from beneath his grip and guided his hand to rest on his own forehead. "You're still burning up. Want me to take your temperature again?"

"No need," Charley said, his eyes fluttering open to look at her. "Can you make some soup in the morning?"

She blinked in surprise before a teasing smile broke out. "Are you trying to treat me like a free maid?"

"Yes." He held her gaze, his tone dead serious.

She figured he was just messing with her.

"Go back to sleep," she said gently. "You don't have to teach tomorrow, so you can sleep in. I'll make you something when I get up."

He closed his eyes again, looking deeply at peace.

Lavinia stepped out of the bedroom and quietly shut the door. She took a few steps down the hall before freezing.

Wait a minute.

That entire exchange... it sounded exactly like a married couple.

And she was a married woman.

She hesitated. But he was sick, and there was no one else here to take care of him. Helping out a friend in an emergency was perfectly fine, right? High fevers were dangerous. People died from them.
