Zenia's lips twitched. Since things had already escalated this far, she decided to just lay it all out.
"Garnett, if you really care about Lavinia, you need to rein yourself in." She paused. "I didn't come here on my own accord today."
Garnett instantly understood the subtext. It was his father. The old man had found out about him helping the Sloans move their family plot in Portus City.
"Don't worry, I know exactly what I'm doing," he said, pronouncing every syllable with sharp precision. "I was simply paying off the Harper family's debt. Now that it's paid, it's over."
He turned his head to look at Lavinia. Her face was pale, her expression completely blank. Garnett spoke with unwavering finality:
"There will only ever be one Mrs. Harper, and that is Lavinia."
Realizing she had completely lost the upper hand, Zenia stood up. "Your issues with your father and your wife are your own business. I'm leaving."
"Take care." Garnett didn't even pretend to get up to see her out.
Lavinia pulled her hand free from his grasp and stood up to walk Zenia to the door.
The moment she closed the door behind her, Garnett said, "Lavinia, we need to talk."
Lavinia had no desire to talk to him. She walked straight to the hallway closet and dragged her suitcase back out.
Garnett let out a dark chuckle, utterly exasperated by this stubborn little woman.
"Even if you're determined to run away, at least let me finish speaking." He paused. "Besides, running back to your family right now will only cause problems for Saul. He's probably pulling his hair out as we speak."
Lavinia froze. "What do you mean? What happened to Saul?"
Garnett unlocked his phone, pulled up the news feed from last night, and handed it to her. "Something happened at Saul's factory. Look for yourself."
Lavinia walked over, glanced at the screen, and froze in horror.
Massive crowds of people were gathered outside Saul's adhesive factory, holding signs and screaming for their unpaid debts and wages.
Garnett's tone softened. "I only found out last night. Saul was part of a mutual guarantee chain with a few other small business owners. One of them took off with the money, leaving Saul legally responsible for the entire debt."
Right in front of her, Garnett pulled out his phone and dialed the corporate HR Director.
"Hello, this is Garnett Harper. Effective immediately, transfer Corinne out of the executive office. Start looking for a new chief secretary."
Lavinia blinked in surprise.
Garnett hung up and looked at her warmly. "Disrespecting you is disrespecting me. I'm going to make sure the entire company knows that your business is my business."
He paused. "So, what do you say, Lavinia? Can you forgive me? We've been married for two years, and yesterday was our first real fight. You aren't going to sentence our marriage to death over one argument, are you?"
Lavinia stood up abruptly and said stiffly, "I'm going to call Saul."
She grabbed her phone, hurried into the guest bedroom, and locked the door behind her.
Garnett watched her go, a faint smile touching his lips.
If he couldn't handle one little woman, what kind of CEO would he be?
