The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 43

Lavinia and Garnett sat on the sofa, with several cushions between them.

She held a mug of water in her hands, while he sat with his legs crossed, watching her coolly.

Lavinia gently set the mug on the coffee table and spoke slowly.

"I know you never liked me to begin with. I was foolish back then. This marriage was a mistake from the start."

Garnett's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.

She continued evenly, "I've known for a long time that you like Sigrid. You two are in love. I understand that, and I wish you both the best."

She paused. "I don't think there's any need to keep the three of us trapped in this mess. I'm stepping aside so you two can be together openly."

He stared at her coldly, his fingers unconsciously curling into fists.

Lavinia looked back at him, completely confused by his reaction.

"What's wrong? You're not happy?"

She thought for a moment and added, "Oh, don't worry, I don't want anything. My name isn't on the deed to this house, and I don't hold any shares in the company. I'm only taking my clothes."

"And the jewelry Grandma Judith gave me is already in your possession. I don't want that either. You can give it to Sigrid later."

"Also, my uncle has already been transferred out of St. Agnes Hospital, and his medical bills have been completely settled. Saul and I will handle everything from here on out."

She was laying out the divorce terms with perfectly logical precision when he suddenly cut her off with a voice like ice.

"Are you done?"

Lavinia froze. She looked up and saw that Garnett's expression had turned murderous.

She pressed her lips together. "Fine. What do you suggest?"

He stared her down, his long legs still casually crossed, striking a relaxed pose while his hands had secretly balled into tight fists.

"Hello, Sigrid. Yeah, okay, I'm heading over."

He hung up the phone and threw another glance at the pathetic little woman on the couch, a cold smirk touching the corner of his mouth.

"You were right about one thing. I don't like you. I feel absolutely nothing for you."

He paused, enunciating every word.

"Whoever I like, whoever I sleep with—you're just going to have to endure it and play the obedient Mrs. Harper. Swallow your dissatisfaction!"

He grabbed his jacket, strode to the door, and slammed it shut behind him.

Halfway to the elevator, Garnett turned back around, pulled out his keys, and deadbolted the front door from the outside.

Lavinia was still sitting on the sofa, barely processing what had just happened, when she heard the heavy clunk of the deadbolt. She rushed over and grabbed the handle, realizing she was locked in.
