This bastard had genuinely coveted Lavinia.
Why hadn't she told him? Why hadn't she breathed a single word about it?
A vicious, agonizing cramp twisted in his chest, catching his breath in his throat and sending a searing pain radiating through his entire body.
The actual truth was only unraveling step-by-step now that he had completely lost her. Nothing could be more brutal.
He understood now. He had lost her long before he even realized there was a problem. Over the past few months, he had been acting like an idiot, blindly assuming she would eventually come home.
He thought she was just throwing a tantrum, that she couldn't bear to actually leave him. Who could just walk away from someone they'd loved for years without a second thought? He had been absolutely convinced she would look back at him.
It wasn't fair. He didn't know. If he had known, he would have treated her beautifully from the very beginning. He would have treated her better than anyone else in the world.
Seeing Garnett's silence, Tobin assumed he was calming down and cautiously tried to pry the hand away from his collar. "Garnett, we're friends. This is all just a huge misunderstanding. I can explain."
Garnett's grip tightened abruptly, shoving Tobin backward so hard he slammed into the back of the sofa.
"Today was her welcome-back ceremony. Did you buy that smear campaign against her online? Did you hire people to spread rumors and destroy her reputation? Answer me!"
Tobin threw his hands up defensively. "That wasn't me! It was Sigrid! Sigrid was furious, she's the one who made me do it!"
Garnett's eyes turned instantly glacial. "You take responsibility for your own actions. Don't you dare drag Sigrid into this. Her mother has a heart condition—are you trying to kill them both?"
"Fine, fine, I won't bring her into it," Tobin surrendered quickly. "So what do we do now? The damage is already done."
"You're going to pay up," Garnett hissed, his voice dropping dangerously low. "Otherwise, the Jensen Group is finished doing business in Blossom City."
"How much?"
"Twenty million."
Tobin rapidly calculated the cost in his head. Twenty million—compared to the scale of his family's empire, it was essentially the price of a luxury condo downtown. He'd consider it paying a toll to make a massive headache disappear.
