The reporter nodded vigorously, practically eating up his response. She then checked her notes. "Oh, there was also a gentleman who helped Mrs. Harper last night. He was caught in one of the photos. Is he around? We'd love to ask him a few questions."
The moment he heard that, Saul gave Charley a violent shove forward.
"He's right here! This is the guy who was saving people with Lavinia last night!"
The cameras instantly pivoted, aiming their lenses dead on Charley.
Garnett threw Charley a frigid glare, then turned back to the reporter with a completely straight face. "This is Lavinia's cousin."
"I don't do interviews," Charley said coolly.
He sidestepped the camera tripods and walked straight out the front door.
The reporters exchanged awkward glances, the room descending into a few agonizing seconds of dead silence.
Realizing the atmosphere had turned sour, the crew quickly packed up their gear and said their goodbyes.
As soon as the house was empty, Lavinia stood up and glared down at Garnett, who was still casually sitting on her couch.
"Are you done putting on a show?"
Garnett's PR smile vanished. "If I didn't put on a show, what do you think the tabloids would say? A married woman running around with another man in the middle of the night? Is that the headline you want, Mrs. Harper?"
Lavinia clenched her fists. "There has to be a limit to your shamelessness. We're getting a divorce!"
Garnett leaned back, completely unbothered. "After this broadcast airs today, the whole city will know exactly who Mrs. Harper is. Where do you think you're going to hide?"
"Mr. Harper, out of curiosity, where were you last night?" Charley's voice floated from the doorway. He had slipped back in unnoticed.
Garnett's expression darkened.
He locked eyes with the man, glaring at him as if trying to rip him apart.
"You've been into my wife for a long time, haven't you, Charley?"
The air in the room completely froze.
Saul shot Charley a quick glance. Garnett was clearly baiting him—the question was whether Charley would take the hit.
Charley didn't even blink. He replied flawlessly, "What kind of liking are we talking about?"
Garnett clamped his jaw shut.
