Just as she neared her front door, her footsteps faltered.
A figure stood under the glow of the streetlight. Tall, perfectly proportioned, with striking features. Yet tonight, he looked unexpectedly disheveled.
It was Garnett.
Lavinia approached slowly, stopping a couple of feet away.
"What are you doing here?" she asked coldly.
Garnett didn't answer. His gaze was fixed heavily on her.
That morning, he had been in the middle of a meeting when Sigrid called.
Seeing her name flash on the screen, a bad feeling had washed over him. He immediately excused himself to take it.
Sigrid's voice had been eerily calm as she told him she'd been completely blindsided by Lavinia.
She claimed Lavinia had complained directly to the mysterious major investor of Celestial Capital. The elusive powerhouse had personally shown up, firing her on the spot and even ousting Caden Coleman.
*"Garnett, I think there's something going on between Lavinia and Lucian Roche,"* Sigrid had said.
Hearing that, he had gripped his phone so hard the screen nearly cracked under the pressure.
Sigrid's words echoed in his ears: *"You underestimated her, Garnett. We both did. She's not the innocent girl she pretends to be. It's all an act."*
Lavinia shifted uncomfortably under his intense stare and looked away. "If you don't have anything to say, please leave. Stalking a single woman outside her house in the middle of the night is psycho behavior."
"Did you orchestrate getting Sigrid fired?" he asked, his voice like ice.
Lavinia blinked, caught off guard. "Me? Did she tell you that?"
A dark storm raged in his eyes. She could see his anger was teetering on the edge of exploding.
He was here to play the hero for his precious ex.
Lavinia let out a cynical, hollow laugh. "I had no idea I possessed the power to set Ms. Sloan up. I guess I'm moving up in the world."
Garnett's eyes darkened further, his jaw set in a rigid line.
"Who was the man who bought you those pearls?" he demanded.
"Did you hook up with Lucian Roche?"
Lavinia shot him a look of absolute disbelief. "Your imagination is out of control."
She turned to walk away, but Garnett lunged forward, grabbing her wrist in a crushing grip.
His jaw was tight, his eyes pitch-black.
The pain in her wrist flared instantly; it felt like he was going to snap her bones.
He glared down at her. "Did you sleep with him?"
"What are you talking about? Who?" She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"You and Lucian Roche." His voice was a serrated blade. "You latched onto him to get revenge on Sigrid. Did you let him touch you? Why else would he go to such lengths for you?"
Lavinia gritted her teeth, glaring back at him. "You think I'd degrade myself just to get back at her? Is she really that important? Do you think I'm that cheap? Garnett, in your eyes, every woman who isn't your precious golden girl is just garbage, aren't they? So why did you even come here tonight? Just to hurl baseless insults at me?"
"In my eyes, you're exactly the same as her. The utter disgust I feel for Sigrid is exactly what I feel for you," she spat.
