Garnett's face was completely thunderous. He stared at her, saying nothing.
"You didn't buy that jewelry? Say something!"
He remained silent.
Sigrid broke down sobbing. She was entirely shattered.
Years ago, when her father had been sentenced to prison and their family assets liquidated, she went from being the beloved campus queen and top student to the disgraced daughter of a convict. She had felt this exact same devastation back then.
She had clawed her way back up for eight agonizing years, finally escaping hell, only to be shoved right back down into the dirt overnight.
How was she supposed to show her face in Blossom City ever again?
Looking at her tear-stained face, Garnett felt a tight knot twist in his chest.
"It's been a while, Mr. Harper."
A vaguely familiar female voice rang out from behind them.
Garnett and Sigrid turned around. It was Zoey Wallace, the gangster-like woman who had run them in circles back on Marina Island.
She sported a sharp bob, bold red lipstick, and was dressed impeccably in a white vest and matching collarless blazer.
The difference this time was that she was flanked by several local police detectives in uniform.
"You're behind this?" Garnett demanded coldly.
Zoey smiled. "You hijacked my property deal at the Marina Island Property Registry last time. What, am I not allowed to return the favor?"
Garnett stepped in front of Sigrid, glaring furiously at Zoey. "If you have a problem, take it up with me. Bullying a defenseless woman makes you look pathetic."
Zoey laughed outright. "Oh, Mr. Harper, this was meant for you all along."
Garnett froze.
Zoey continued, "Who would've thought you were capable of stooping this low? Taking your wife's belongings to sugarcoat your mistress. And this Ms. Sloan..."
Garnett gritted his teeth, glaring viciously at Zoey. "Cowards! You won't even give a name. Who exactly is your boss?"
"I already told you, Mr. Harper. You don't have the clearance to speak to my boss."
Zoey turned her mocking smile to Sigrid. "Ms. Sloan, are you having trouble letting go of jewelry that isn't yours?"
Humiliated in front of everyone, Sigrid unclasped the pearls and handed them back to Zoey.
Holding the necklace, Zoey sneered, "See? That wasn't so hard. I'm actually a very reasonable person."
She locked eyes with Sigrid. "By the way, Ms. Sloan, I hired two paparazzi before coming here tonight. I'm sure they got the entire sequence of events perfectly on camera."
Sigrid began to tremble violently at the threat.
"I'd advise you to keep your head down and stay in your lane from now on," Zoey smirked. "Otherwise, I can't guarantee when tonight's little show might accidentally leak onto the internet."
With that, she let out a sharp whistle, turned on her heel, and climbed into a black executive van waiting by the curb.
