The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 147

"Recall the loan?" Lavinia's heart sank heavily. "Did the bank really say they're recalling the loan?"

"The bank officially notified me just now, but don't worry. Charley helped me secure a line of credit with a foreign bank a while back, so we can borrow from there. I'm going to pull those funds out for now to handle the emergency," Saul explained over the phone.

"Saul, Garnett is behind this, isn't he?" Lavinia gripped her phone, trembling with rage.

He had actually gone through with it! It was utterly despicable!

"Just don't worry about it, I've got a plan to deal with it. Oh, by the way, Garnett has still been looking for you these past few days, so be careful," Saul warned.

After hanging up, Lavinia clutched her phone, her mind completely detached from her work.

"Lavinia, Jacqueline, Howard, come in here," Jocelyn Chandler called from the door of the director's office.

Lavinia and Jacqueline exchanged a glance before walking in together. A moment later, Howard followed.

Jocelyn tossed a business plan onto her desk. "This is the pitch deck for Joplin Adhesives Corp. The investment committee is reviewing it next week. We're short-handed, so the three of you will form a team to help me with this project."

"Any questions?" Jocelyn asked, crossing her arms.

"Ms. Chandler, I have a conflict," Lavinia paused. "Joplin Adhesives Corp is my cousin's company. According to compliance regulations, I have to recuse myself."

"The founder, Saul Joplin, is your cousin?" Jocelyn asked.

Lavinia nodded. "Yes, but we grew up together. He's like a brother to me."

"Alright, understood," Jocelyn said. "You can step out for now."

Lavinia nodded and turned to leave.

As she closed the door, Jocelyn's voice filtered through the crack: "Mr. Coleman places a high priority on this project, so I expect excellent work from you."

After hanging up, Lavinia turned around and found Jocelyn standing right behind her, watching her with an unreadable expression.

"The person you were just on the phone with... was that Charley Sheffield?" Jocelyn asked.

Lavinia was momentarily taken aback. "Ms. Chandler, you know him?"

"On the day of your interview, the pin on your lapel—he gave that to you, didn't he?" Jocelyn stared at Lavinia.

Lavinia couldn't help but feel that her director's gaze was somewhat... guarded? She suddenly remembered Jocelyn asking her, "What is your relationship with him?" during the interview.

Could the "him" have been Charley Sheffield?

Catching on to the implication, Lavinia quickly explained, "Well, he's Saul's high school classmate, and he was the one who recommended I apply for the interview. Charley gave me that pin to use as a lucky charm. I gave it back to him right after the interview was over."
