On her first day at Celestial Capital, Charley was so worried Lavinia would be late for the morning meeting that he insisted on personally driving her to work.
On the way, he briefed her on the typical morning meeting protocols, reminding her to listen closely, take mental notes, and absolutely never zone out on her phone.
Lavinia laughed. "I know, I know! You nag more than my actual brother."
Charley simply let out a soft huff of amusement through his nose.
Monday morning traffic was agonizingly slow, like a clogged artery. As Charley's Toyota SUV crawled along the street, he remained perfectly calm, chatting with Lavinia while navigating the gridlock.
Lavinia was idly watching the slow-moving cars out the window when she suddenly ducked, pressing herself flat against the backseat.
"What's wrong?" Charley asked.
"That Bentley up ahead. It's Garnett's car," Lavinia whispered frantically.
Why was he everywhere? It felt like he was haunting her. Running into him on her very first day of work felt like a terrible omen.
Charley's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. He lightly tapped the gas pedal, pulling up beside the Bentley, and cast a glance through his rearview mirror.
"Sigrid Sloan is in the car with him."
Lavinia froze. Sharing a car this early in the morning... they must have spent the night together.
Her eyelashes fluttered slightly.
Charley switched lanes, finding a smoother path, and effortlessly left the Bentley behind in the dust.
Once Lavinia sat back up, she went quiet. Pulling a medical mask from her bag, she silently slipped it over her face.
Sigrid offered a gentle, glowing smile. "There's no need. I'm not a child. I was already the Director of Quantitative Research at a top-tier investment bank back in the Aethelgard Country. Chairman Coleman recruited me for my skills, not because of my partner."
Partner? Lavinia felt physically sick. She and Garnett weren't even divorced yet, and here they were parading around as partners in broad daylight. Did they have absolutely zero shame?
But more importantly, she had finally escaped Garnett's clutches and thought she could quietly disappear and live in peace for a while. Of all the places in the world, she had landed in the exact same company as Sigrid Sloan. Her carefully hidden sanctuary was on the verge of being exposed.
Lavinia glanced back over her shoulder. Charley's car was still parked a hundred yards away. Had he seen Garnett and Sigrid too?
Should she turn back? Give up this hard-won opportunity?
Lavinia stood rooted to the spot for a moment. Then, tightening her grip on her purse strap, she merged into the crowd of rushing commuters and marched straight into the building.
She stepped into the elevator. The doors were just about to slide shut when a hand shot out to block them. As the doors glided open again, Garnett Harper's strikingly handsome, cold face came into view.
