Chapter 8
Lyric POV
Later in training, Delta Sam tells me I will be sparring with Savannah, and my stomach drops.
Savannah is Summer’s best friend.
ร
If she wants to spar me, it is not because she suddenly cares about improving her technique. Savannah has never spoken to me
unless Summer was involved.
“You good?” Winter links me.
“Yeah. Sparring with Savannah,” I reply.
“Drama,” she says.
“Or danger.”
“Can I have Lyric and Savannah in the sparring circle?” Delta Sam calls.
We both step forward.
Before Savannah enters the circle, I catch Summer leaning close to whisper something in her ear. Savannah’s mouth curls into a
wicked grin.
“They are planning something,” Nova says.
“I know.”
“Keep your guard up.”
I can feel Mason watching me from across the training grounds, like he is waiting for me to look at him.
I don’t.
I can’t.
“Begin,” Delta Sam calls.
Savannah launches herself at me immediately.
I sidestep her, and she barely catches herself before she hits the ground.
“She’s sloppy,” Nova says.

ខ
Savannah spins and charges again. I use her momentum against her, catch her arm, and drive two punches into her stomach.
A normal spar would have ended after that.
Savannah was not trying to win.
She was trying to hurt me.
She growls and comes at me again.
This time, her fist lands directly against the fresh stab wound in my side.
Pain explodes through me.
I drop before I can stop myself.
The same wound almost nobody should know about.
Which means Summer told her.
“Get up,” Nova says.
I push myself back to my feet, one hand pressed against my side.
So that is the game.
Use my injury against me until I cannot fight back.
Good.
At least now I know what she is trying to do.
Savannah circles me, watching my hand over my wound. She lunges again, fakes right, then drives her elbow into my left side.
I hiss and drop to one knee.
“She is playing dirty,” Winter links.
“I gathered that.”
“Finish this, Lyric,” Nova says, annoyed now.
I force myself up again.
Savannah thinks I am too hurt to fight back.

Chapter 8
She thinks Summer gave her an easy win.
She charges one more time.
This time, I see every move before she makes it.
I catch her arm, drive my fist Into her ribs, and when she stumbles back, I swing my leg straight into her face.
Blood spills from her mouth.
She snarls, furious now.
“Angry means sloppy,” Nova says.
Savannah charges at me again.
I step aside at the last second, grab her arm, and use her momentum to flip her over my shoulder.
She hits the ground hard, the air leaving her lungs in one sharp gasp.
“Time,” Delta Sam yells.
The second the fight is over, my body gives out.
I drop to my knees, pressing my hand harder against my side.
Blood seeps through my shirt.
She reopened my stitches.
Pain burns through me, but all I can think about is Summer.
A stab wound yesterday.
This today.
She is escalating.
Mason is beside me before I can even stand.
He scoops me up into his arms and starts toward the pack hospital.
“Mason, put me down. I can walk,” I protest, even as Nova purrs contentedly in my mind.
“No. You are hurt. I am carrying you,” he says.

Chapter 8
And from the corner of my eye, I see Summer watching us.
Her face is calm.
But her eyes are not.
Summer POV
Mason thinks breaking up with me changes something.
It does not.
He is mine.
He has been paying too much attention to that freak again, and I thought after Nathaniel stabbed her at school yesterday, she
would finally understand.
A broken arm did not work.
A broken rib did not work.
Keeping Mason away from her used to be enough.
Not anymore.
“Maybe she is his mate,” Seris says quietly.
“If she is his mate, she will wish the Moon Goddess never made her one when I am done with her,” I snap.
“Maybe we should wait for our own mate,” she says softly.
“No. Mason will be mine. I have worked too hard for him.”
Last night, I told Savannah to ask Delta Sam for a spar with Lyric.
When we reach the training grounds, Savannah walks ahead of me.
“Wait up,” I call.
She turns back.
“She has a fresh stab wound on her left side,” I tell her. “Hit it, and she will not be able to fight you properly.”
Savannah grins.
“Easy.”

Chapter 8
I watch the spar from the edge of the training grounds.
The first time Savannah hits Lyric’s wound, she drops.
Good.
That should have been enough.
But Lyric gets back up.
The second time Savannah hits her, she drops to one knee again.
Still, she gets back up.
That has always been Lyric’s problem.
She never stays down.
Then she flips Savannah onto the ground so hard Delta Sam has to call the match.
Lyric drops to her knees the second it is over, blood staining the side of her shirt.
And Mason is at her side in seconds.
Of course he is.
He picks her up like she is something precious and carries her toward the hospital.
Every lesson should have taught Lyric to stay away from him.
Instead, she keeps surviving them.
And Mason keeps running back to her.
“She is strong,” Seris says. “She would make a good Luna.”
“Shut up,” I snarl, blocking her out.
Warnings are not working anymore.
Mason used to walk past Lyric without giving her a second glance.
I made sure of that.
Now I need something bigger.
