The Luna Queen's Rebirth (Ellie and Dominic) novel Chapter 538

Chapter 538

“Sooner than that, if the site plans keep coming along like they have.” His eyes twinkled at me from behind the lenses as the fog cleared.

Edmund and I had been drafting the museum idea since February. It was slow going, what with his age and my pregnancy and the distance between us. But once a month, like clockwork, we met at that diner and talked about plans and floor layouts and archives. It was coming together. Slowly, but surely.

It was then that I noticed that Monroe’s posse had begun to filter back toward their cars. The gates opened, and without saying goodbye, Monroe got into his vehicle and drove off.

“He’s leaving,” I murmured, grabbing Dominic’s arm.

He let out a breath. “Good riddance.”

The knot in my chest finally came undone since his arrival. Maybe he’d come here tonight expecting to watch the whole thing fall on its face. Instead, he’d watched all of our guests support our initiative, and decided to cut his losses while he could still leave with his head held high.

For a second, I almost wondered why he’d bothered showing up at all.

But then Edmund was tugging on my sleeve, cheeks rosy, and the staff were weaving through the tables with trays of champagne, pressing a glass into every open hand, and the thought slipped away from me entirely. Dominic took a flute. Bastian took one. Somewhere off to my left, I heard Sarah laugh as she and Abigail took theirs. Mine was sparkling cider, on account of the obvious, poured specially for me by the kitchen.

Edmund grabbed the microphone and tapped it, making it screech across the crowd. Everyone turned, glasses in hand.

“Friends! If you’ll indulge an old man.” He raised his glass high, and five hundred glasses rose with it, catching the lantern light. “For sixty years, I have tended the history of a people the world called extinct. Tonight, that ends. Tonight, they live again. To Goldenveil! To the Twin Packs! To the Lycans!”

“To the Lycans!” the crowd thundered.

Everyone drank. The band started back up. I sipped my cider and leaned into Dominic’s arm.

At a table nearby, a woman knocked over her glass and laughed so loud and long that it made me look. She was swaying on her feet, cheeks red, hands pressed to lips that wouldn’t stop giggling. Another laugh joined it. Then ten more. Then a hundred, rippling outward across the lawn like a wildfire.

“Dominic?” I turned in a slow circle. “What’s going on?”
