Chapter 546
“Because I’ve been terrified, for months now, that you might say no.”
I pulled my head back. “Why-”
“We’ve gone through this before. Twice for you. Once for me, at least, as far as this body’s memory allows. I ruined it both times. I destroyed you from the inside. I made you feel small and insignificant, and I hurt you, and I betrayed you, and I made you think you had to run.”
An owl hooted somewhere in a treetop.
“For months,” he went on, “I toyed with the idea of asking you at all. I was late to your ultrasound because I was picking the ring up from the jeweler, and even then, I thought, ‘There’s no way she’ll say yes, not again.’ And today, when I heard you tell my mother that it didn’t matter to you, I wondered once more if it would make you happier if I didn’t ask at all.”
He laughed wryly, a hollow, choked sound.
I stared at him for a long time. My throat was too tight to speak. Past the hedges, I heard the sounds of cars fading down the driveway, voices, the stage being broken down. Soon, it would just be us, the rest of the world asleep and unaware.
Right now, this moment felt eternal.
“You’re an idiot.”
Dominic looked up at me. “Ellie-”
“You absolute idiot,” I said, shaking my head. I turned toward him and took his face in both of my hands, cupping his cheeks hard. “I don’t need a fairytale, you fool. I’ve had enough of stories. I just want you.”
He blinked. “You… I thought you would be too wary after everything that happened to-”
“Of course I’m wary.” I dropped my hands to his wrists. The ring caught the light, shooting flames over both of our fingers. “I’ll never stop being wary, not after everything we’ve been through together. But that’s the thing; we’ve been through it together. And despite what happened, at this point, I can’t imagine going through it with anyone else.”
