“Your heart’s racing,” she murmured, tilting her head up at me.

“Big day,” I said.

She smiled and kissed my jaw. “Go. Be an Alpha. I promised Bastian I’d listen to him practice his speech.” And off she went across the lawn, one hand on her belly, calling for my future brother-in-law.

I patted the pocket. Nineteen times.

Just then, my Beta came across the lawn at a run, phone clutched in one hand, weaving between the caterers.

“Alpha.” He skidded to a stop in front of me, breathing hard. “I just received word that the second supply truck was attacked on the road, about twenty miles out.”

“Attacked? By whom?”

“Rogues,” he said. “The driver says they ran him into the ditch, slashed the tires, and cleaned out the back of the truck.” He swallowed. “The driver’s banged up, but he’s alive. He says they took everything-the food, the crates, all of it. But they left his wallet.”

Strange. The food made sense. But rogues, leaving behind a wallet full of cash and credit cards?

That didn’t make sentse at all.

I’d met plenty of rogues in my life. Desperate, hungry. A rogue would rob you of your last dollar and the shoes off your feet. What a rogue would not do was ambush a box truck at nine-thirty in the morning for a load of catering and leave a perfectly good wallet sitting on the seat.

Unless, of course, somebody had already paid them better.

Monroe.

The name settled into place in an instant. The pulled RSVPs. The stranger with the camera. Now this. If there was one thing about Monroe, it was that he never did his own dirty work-no doubt he was lounging in his office right now, a hundred miles away, waiting for word that my event was falling apart.

My hands curled at my sides, anger creeping up behind the ring. But I quickly swallowed it back down.
