Chapter 529
Ellie’s POV

It was a warm spring day. The day before the event, in fact. Mid-May, balmy with a breeze that smelled like budding flowers and fresh grass. The house had been full of strangers all morning, caterers and delivery people and males hauling folding chairs and tables, so when the one car I actually cared about came up the drive, I was out on the front steps before it stopped.
Bastian climbed out, took one look at me, and froze with his hand still on the door.
“The letters didn’t mention you’d gotten this big.”
“Good to see you too,” I said, and hugged him anyway, or at least, I tried to. My belly got there first. He laughed and folded his arms around me over the top of it, careful not to squish me this time around.
“Seven months,” I said into his coat. “It’s a girl.”
My brother pulled back to look at me. “That’s good. We have too many boys in this family already.”
The drive had done him good, or maybe the last few months had. The dark rings were gone. He’d shaved. He stood straighter than he had on that bridge in the winter, and when he smiled, it didn’t look like it took the force of a thousand suns to make it happen.
He popped the trunk and started unloading his luggage. A garment bag that no doubt had his nicest suit in it, various presentation cases, a crate of Goldenveil wine for tomorrow, and, sitting on top of it all, a stuffed wolf with a red bow tied around its neck.
“Eli,” he said, before I could ask. “He made me promise it would be the first gift she ever gets. Picked it out himself.”
I took it and squeezed it to my chest. “She’s going to love it.”
“Dad’s sorry he couldn’t make it, by the way.” He shouldered the garment bag. “He wanted to come, but his leg … Nico decided to stay with him, too. For support.”
“Goldenveil needs them more than I do,” I said. I took my brother’s arm and guided him up the steps.
Inside, Dominic’s Beta jogged past us in the front hall with a clipboard and a long-suffering look in his eyes, trailed by two females who were scolding him about catering. Out back, somebody was testing a microphone.” Check, check, one two.”
