Chapter 525
Ellie’s POV
Five months had passed. The bump on my belly made sure I knew exactly how many weeks, how many days, how many hours-practically down to the minute, it felt like it was growing so fast sometimes.
My bump seemed to grow every single day, like the pup in there was in a hurry to get out. Winter passed, and all my sweaters started to stretch out before Sarah finally insisted I get some maternity clothes. It was March now, still cold and dreary, but I’d opted for lots of yellows and pinks, a promise of the summer baby on its way. Every morning, the reflection looked a little less like the woman who had climbed a mountain, and I found that I didn’t mind at all.
The Luna duties crept back one day at a time. First it was sitting in on meetings, promising that I wouldn’t have much to say, that I wasn’t ready to take on that role yet. And then my opinions came out, as they always did, and soon enough I was running the meetings and stepping back into my old work with a new fervor that I hadn’t felt in too long.
When I wasn’t making sure the pack was running smoothly during Dominic’s campaign, I kept my hands busy at the pack clinic twice a week, putting bandaids on cuts and checking fevers and administering tinctures, and on slow days when the snow was too deep and my ankles felt too swollen to move around much, I studied in the house library.
Dominic had surprised me for the holidays with a set of volumes on ancient Lycan medicines that I read from front to back twice over, taking notes in the margins, educating myself on all of the plants that my Seeker might one day lead me to.
No more incidents with hallucinogenic mushrooms, I decided; next time, when the Seeker went off-and it inevitably would-I would let it lead me to the plant, but I would know exactly what it was and what it did.
Dinner with my friends stayed sacred, every week, no exceptions. Abigail took up knitting the day I spilled the news and had so far produced four hats. Sarah kept a running list of name ideas on her phone; I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I already had some in mind, and they weren’t even close to the ones she’d picked out.
Lucas still went quiet whenever Dominic came up, but he stopped looking bitter about it. He asked how the pregnancy was faring, doted on me like he planned to be called Uncle Lucas no matter what, and even socialized with Dominic without making snide comments, which was progress.
Some weekends I drove out to Hanna’s headquarters and volunteered at the open houses, bandaging stuffed bears for a line of wide-eyed pups under that mural of dancing children or giving brief lectures on traditional medicines to small crowds of no more than ten. It wasn’t the same as being on assignment, but it was good work, and I enjoyed it. I think Hanna liked having me around, too.
As for Dominic, the campaign ate him alive most days. His face was on posters, Monroe was muttering about ” outsider agendas” on the radio, and my mate came home late more nights than he didn’t.
