After about twenty minutes, we discovered that the taps might just be a life-saver after all.

The moment his axe touched a stone in front of us, the rock dropped out from under the axe head and vanished into the floor. We all froze, listening for the sound of it hitting something below. There was none.

“Fantastic,” Dominic muttered. “An endless fall to doom.”

“We should probably rope up,” Bastian suggested. We did just that, and after, we picked our way carefully through the tunnel, still tapping, occasionally stopping to watch another stone fall and then hop over the gap. I wasn’t entirely sure if the false stones were intentionally placed or not, but I got the sense that they might have been put there to keep out intruders.

After another twenty minutes, the passage split again. Bastian stopped, holding up his hand, listening. The sound of water was coming from the right.

“This way,” he said, stepping toward the passage.

His foot hit something.

I heard the sound of it slamming into him before my mind even registered what it was.

“BASTIAN!”

The rope tore at my harness and yanked me off my feet as my brother went flying, thrust to the side by an enormous swinging log, sending him sliding down a narrow, slanted tunnel clearly made to discard bodies. I hit the ground on my hip and slid until Dominic’s weight stopped me, his feet braced on either side of the entrance, gasping.

Below me, I heard my brother groaning. “My shoulder…”

“We’ve got you!” Dominic was already hauling, hand over hand. Once he got me out, I braced my boots against the wall and pulled with him until Bastian came up.

His shoulder was sticking out at an odd angle. Dislocated. Badly.

I reached for the Seeker ability, but found nothing. We were too far from any flora down here. I’d have to set his shoulder the old-fashioned way.

Rolling up my sleeves, I turned to Dominic. “Help me set his shoulder,” I said over the sound of Bastian groaning. “Hold him in place.”

Dominic nodded and dropped to his knees next to me. My hands were scraped raw from the fall, but I ignored the sting as I gripped Bastian’s shoulder and met his eyes.
