Chapter 463
“There was no drug, Dominic.” Vivian’s smile was coy as she looked up at him. “Our wolves went into heat. Nothing more.”
Dominic shook his head, muttering a few choice words under his breath that I wouldn’t repeat.
Vivian, for her part, seemed to be enjoying this. Cornered, stripped of the veil and the name and everything else, and yet she was still enjoying the game she’d been playing for two lifetimes. Trying to make me squirm over a mate that had never been, and would never be, hers.
It had worked on me too many times before. But it wouldn’t work on me now. Not when I still felt Dominic’s pulse thudding in tandem with my own, not when I felt his love and devotion and a million other emotions flowing through our new bond.
“I want to tell you a story,” I said, taking a step forward.
Vivian’s eyes slid to me.
“There was a woman who married an Alpha,” I said. “The marriage was arranged, and it was cold, and for years she drifted around a house that never once felt like hers. And then one day, she took a blade in her back.”
“Is this supposed to mean something to me?” Vivian asked.
“The wound began to heal,” I went on, ignoring her, my voice trembling a little now-not from fear, but from rage. “But then, just as the healers thought she was in the clear, her condition worsened. Black veins spread up her limbs and neck, choking her. She coughed up blood onto her sheets. And moments before the Wolfsbane toxin finally took her, her own sister walked into the room, sneering, wearing her crown.”
Vivian blinked. “What kind of fairytale-”
“I’m done hiding it.” I leaned forward, bracing my hands on either side of the cot where she sat, leaning so close our noses nearly touched. “I’ve lived for two lifetimes, Vivian. I died from Wolfsbane toxin exposure. I thought it was over.”
She stared at me.
“And then I woke up in this life, two years before any of it happened, and I have spent every day since trying to keep history from repeating.” I straightened. “As it turns out, there was someone else working against that purpose the entire time. My own sister, seemingly.”
The cell went silent. Vivian looked up at me like I was crazy, then looked over at my father, but he didn’t even flinch. He’d heard this all already.
Vivian looked at Dominic then. “You can’t believe this nonsense, right?” she asked.
Dominic said nothing. Just glared at her.
Vivian looked back at me. “So… let’s say your little fairytale is true,” she said slowly, as if chewing on the very notion. “You think that I was the one who… what? Assassinated you in a past life?”
