Chapter 456
Ellie’s POV
Working up tears on command turned out to be easier than I expected. All I had to do was think about how sweet Dominic’s lips had tasted on mine in that alleyway.
Then imagine if it had never happened at all.
The tears were streaming down my cheeks by the time I stumbled back through the side door of the meeting house. I’d made sure to tug my hair loose from my braids and unbutton my jacket, leaving it open in the front like I had gotten caught in the middle of something intimate, only to have it torn away at the last moment.
Amelia was on her feet before I made it halfway across the room with Nico right behind her. “Ellie, oh my Goddess, are you okay?” She gripped my arms with both hands. “What happened?”
Nico came skidding to a stop beside her. He caught Dominic’s frame entering through the door behind me, and for once, his face darkened in a way that made him look too much like Bastian.
“What did he do?” he whispered, staring as Dominic sauntered toward the main table.
“I’m fine,” I said, waving them both off. I made a show of wiping my face with my hand, making certain anyone who was watching could see it. “I just want to go home.”
Amelia sighed. “I’ll walk you home.”
“No, no.” I waved her off. “I’ll walk home by myself.” I made sure to say that last part a little louder, ensuring Vivian overheard it. “I need some air after what just happened, anyway.”
My friend and my brother both stared at me. I felt a little bad for lying, but I knew they would understand once I explained everything.
“Let me just go say goodnight to my father,” I said, then began walking over to where he was seated. Stephanie was sitting next to him. Both of them were watching me.
And so was Vivian.
At least, I could feel her eyes on me even if I couldn’t see them behind that insane veil. She’d snapped her head toward me the moment I entered with Dominic behind me.
I held my head high, letting a couple more tears fall as I crossed the room. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Dominic leaning close to Vivian, saying the exact thing we’d agreed on minutes ago.
Judging from the way her shoulders tensed, I assumed it was working.
