I needed to get to my room.
My fingers fumbled to press the right floor button. The elevator seemed to take interminably long, and when I stumbled out, the corridor stretched on for longer than I remembered it. I kept one hand near the wall without touching it, counting the doors, but my head was spinning now, my vision blurring.
“The hell…?” I muttered. My tongue felt thick and heavy. Everything was slow. Too slow. Like moving through molasses.
The second door from mine opened before I reached it.
She was standing in the doorway, her hand on the knob, head tilted behind the veil. I wasn’t sure how she had heard me coming, but then again, my feet felt like they were full of lead, so I was probably making more of a ruckus than I meant to.
“You don’t look well,” she said.
“I’m fine.” I went to stumble past her. “I just need-”
“Come in.” She grabbed my arm and pulled me into her room before I could react. The door shut behind us, and then she was wheeling me toward the bed, pushing me so I was sitting on the edge.
“I think…” My vision was fully blurred by now, two women standing in front of me instead of one, the veils like two twin masks swaying endlessly in front of a face that I couldn’t and oculd never see. “My drink…”
“Lay down.” Her hand met my chest and shoved me back.
I gasped and flopped back against the pillows, arms spread wide. The ceiling swirled above me, lights dancing at the corners of my vision as Lady Everheart bustled to the other side of the room, doing something. Distantly, I felt a strange sort of arousal, as if my body was reacting to a stimulus I didn’t recall taking in.
“Get up,” my wolf was saying from somewhere. He sounded miles away, like I was leagues under the sea and he was somewhere far above the surface. The words washed over me and ebbed off into the tide before I could grasp
them.
The veiled woman said something, her silhouette coming into view again as she moved to stand in front of me. The heat had become something sharper and more insistent, and when she gathered the fabric of her dress in both hands and swung a knee over me, my thoughts turned slippery, the only thing I could hold onto that dull, aching desire straining against my pants.
“Get up,” my wolf howled again. “Get her off. GET UP.”
Vivian said something, but I couldn’t hear it. Whatever was in my system was taking hold now, dragging me down beneath the surface of a dark and stormy and very hot ocean. She leaned back down over me, her lips moving, and this time I could do nothing to stop her because I couldn’t even move my limbs.
The last thing I saw was her face pressing close to mine, once more, before my vision gave out.
I felt a prick in the side of my neck.
And then everything was dark.
