“Crownfall? That far out? Hayley asked.
“Yeah, it’s a long way,” June said with a shrug. “That’s why it took us four years. We kept moving bit by bit, dodging crowds and herds the whole way until we made it here. What about you? What are you doing in Fairfield?”
“I’m looking for someone.”
The moment June heard that, her eyes lit up. “No way, that’s perfect. Sounds like we’re headed the same direction. We can team up!”
“Ahem.” Zach Hodges cut June off with a quiet cough, his gaze shifting to Hayley and Griffin as he sized them up. “Who are you looking for?”
“Someone important,” Hayley said.
“Where?”
“Near the Fairfield South Bus Terminal.”
June perked right back up. “Zach, that’s the same area as Fiona’s place!”
“Stop talking.” Zach shot her a look, then turned back to Hayley, his expression firm. “We can take you with us, but you follow our lead. No messing around. If you can’t do that, we’re not bringing you.”
Hayley paused for half a second, then nodded. “Fine.”
Right then, a thick green haze began to creep past the windows, swallowing up the view outside.
Spencer eased off the gas and guided the SUV to a stop beside the tracks.
Inside the vehicle, June reached forward and flipped a switch. A purifier kicked on with a low hum, cycling the air inside the
cabin.
“I told you your timing was good,” she said, gesturing toward the fog outside. “See that? This stuff rolls in every morning and evening. If you’re out in the open with nowhere to hide, you breathe too much of it in and it’ll mess you up.”
Hayley frowned, watching the haze thicken. “What is it?”
“No idea. Probably something leaking from that chemical plant over there.
“For four years straight?”
“Who knows? It’s been like this since we got here.”
“When did you arrive?” Hayley asked. “How long have you been observing it?”
“About half a year ago,” June replied. “We reached Fairfield a month back. The first thing we noticed was this toxic fog. We breathed a little in by accident, and the next day, we were all running fevers and coughing up blood. So, we pulled back and stayed outside the city. Didn’t dare go in. We just finished getting ready today, and then we ran into you. Pretty crazy, right?”
“Yeah, it is.”
June leaned back.
“Guess it’s just God throwing a few more companions our way. We used to have a bigger group. People joined, then left. The trip from Crownfall to Fairfield is long, and not everyone can stick it out. Some gave up halfway. Some made it home, toand no one left, and just walked off after that. By the time we got here, it was just us.”
A faint sigh slipped from her

“We haven’t met anyone new in over a year.”
Hayley listened, her eyes drifting over the group again.
They didn’t look perfect, but they looked healthy and strong enough. Two of them had inventory abilities, which meant they weren’t short on supplies.
With enough resources and solid combat ability, a group like this could keep going indefinitely.
Most humans crave stability and community, but there are always some who prefer life on the road.
Like one of her subordinates, Jim. In her previous life, he had wandered alone, going wherever his feet took him.
Because they had the strength to survive, that kind of freedom was far better than being cooped up in a base.
