Chapter 774
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!
A volley of flaming arrows tore through the air and plunged straight into the zombie horde, igniting a long streak of fire that split the mass apart and forced them back.
Hayley’s gaze snapped toward the source.
On the hillside beyond the tracks, a modified off-road SUV was charging forward. Several people leaned halfway out of the sunroof, bows drawn tight as they fired one arrow after another without pause.
The flames came from a girl in a black leather jacket with long dreadlocks.
Each arrow was made from sharpened bamboo, the tips wrapped in oil-soaked bundles that caught instantly, bursting into crackling fire the moment they hit the ground.
The noise and flames bought just enough time.
The SUV skidded to a stop beside Hayley, the door swinging open toward her as the girl leaned over the roof, eyes bright and
urgent.
“Get in!”
Hayley didn’t move right away. Her gaze slid from the girl to the others, her mental scan sweeping across them one by one.
The girl had fire and inventory gifts. There were two men beside her, one with water and metal abilities, the other enhanced
speed and strength.
All three were double-Gifted.
Behind them, the zombies were already starting to push through the burning line.
“Raarh! Raarh! Raarh!”
“Hurry up! You don’t wanna be here when the big ones show up!” the girl called again.
Dusk was settling in fast. The sky over Fairfield had gone heavy and gray, and in the distance, a column of green smoke curled up from the direction of a chemical plant, spreading slowly into the air.
Hayley caught sight of it, made her decision, and grabbed Griffin’s wrist before climbing into the SUV.
The moment the door slammed shut, a low, animal-like growl rolled in from the thickening fog outside “Raarh! Raarh…!”
“You got lucky running into us,” the girl said. “Any later, and you’d be done.”
“June, knock it off,” one of the men beside her cut in.
He shared her features. They seemed to be siblings.
June Hodges just laughed, dimples showing. Her smile was so easy and bright that it felt almost out of place in a world like this.
“I’m June. What about you?”
“Hayley,” she said. “This is Griffin.”
“I’m Zach,” the man with water and metal abilities added. “June’s brother.”
“The name’s William,” the other guy said with a quick nod. “I’m friends with the siblings.”
Hayley acknowledged them with a glance before shifting her attention forward.

Two more people sat in the front.
The woman in the passenger seat turned slightly, studying Hayley for a moment before speaking, her voice soft and tinged with
sadness.
“I’m Fiona.”
The man behind the wheel didn’t say a word. His eyes stayed locked on the road as he steered along the slope beside the tracks, guiding the SUV in a smooth are that kept them clear of the wandering zombies below. There was something cold about him.
“That’s Spencer,” June said. “He’s just like that.”
Hayley leaned back slightly, taking them all in again.
Five people total. Three men, two women. They were all young, and most of them were double-gifted.
Fiona had wood and inventory gifts.
The driver caught Hayley’s attention. He had no gifts.
She checked again, her mental scan brushing over him a second time just to be sure, but she sensed nothing.
He was the only normal person in the group.
“Where’s your base?” Hayley asked.
“Base?” June shrugged, resting an arm casually on the seat. “We don’t have one. We met on the road and stuck together.
Everyone’s trying to get home, so we’ve been driving back from Crownfall, stopping at each of our places along the way. We’ve already checked all of ours. Fiona’s the last one. Her home’s here in Fairfield.”
