The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 53

Nora continued to ignore him.

She was an expert at tuning people out.

Whenever she heard something she didn't like, she played deaf with zero guilt.

Annoyed at being brushed off twice, the man slammed his fist into the car window. "Are you deaf?! Your friend wrecked my car! If you want to leave, you're paying me for the extra damage right now!"

The loud bang made Nora jump.

"What is wrong with you?" Fury flaring, she glared at the man, pointing at a small dent above the window. "You're paying for that."

The man raised his fist, dropping his voice into a threat. "A thousand bucks. Hand it over, and I'll let you go."

The police hadn't even filed the report yet; there was no way they were paying a dime.

Grabbing Jasmine's hand, Nora turned to walk away.

The man immediately stepped in front of them, but before he could speak, a deep voice cut through the noise.

"Nora."

It had taken Maloney a few minutes to park. Striding up to Nora, he asked darkly, "What's going on here?"

Nora pointed at the guy. "He was just—"

Before she could finish, the beer-bellied man spun on his heel and scurried away with surprising agility.

Nora blinked.

Maloney was tall and broad-shouldered. Standing amid the chaotic crowd, his commanding presence and bespoke suit made it painfully obvious that he was someone not to be messed with.

But still, that guy ran away ridiculously fast!

"I told him I got into an accident. I asked him to pick me up," Jasmine continued.

"He told me I was stupid for not knowing how to drive. And then he hung up on me."

"But I've been driving for five years. I've never even gotten a parking ticket, let alone crashed. How could he call me stupid?"

"You know, before you got there, that guy blocked my door so I couldn't get out. It was my first accident, and I was terrified. I didn't know what to do, and Yates just hung up."

Tears spilled down Jasmine's cheeks as she choked on her sobs.

Nora hurriedly dug some tissues out of her purse, gently wiping her friend's face.

"When I said I was too scared to get married the other day... I meant it," Jasmine whispered brokenly.

"I've known him for over twenty years. We grew up together, and we have history, I know that. But half the time, he doesn't even see me. I'm so scared I'll regret marrying him."
