Maloney Jameson had learned from Nora that the reason she brought up divorce was Seraphina.
But he didn't know the specifics.
If there had been an actual conflict between Seraphina and Nora, he might have been able to trace it; but if Seraphina had merely whispered some slander or provoked her, there was truly nowhere for Maloney to begin his investigation.
Ask Nora directly?
He couldn't.
The little lady wouldn't let him.
If he asked the wrong question, she would start crying again.
And if she cried, he would have to coax her.
There were far too many uncertain variables in that process.
So, Maloney decided to solve the problem at its root.
He personally paid a visit to the Sinclair Group.
Today, the Sinclair Group was run by Sebastian Sinclair.
Sebastian's background was somewhat similar to Maloney's.
They had both started their own businesses in college; the difference was that Maloney had succeeded, establishing a firm foothold in the industry and gaining widespread fame in just a few short years.
Sebastian, on the other hand, had failed his venture, losing a massive amount of money before returning to inherit the family business.
He did achieve some results at the Sinclair Group, eventually rising to become the head of the family.
But compared to Maloney, he always lacked that dazzling resume of independent struggle; whether in personal achievements, public reputation, or social status, Sebastian was inferior to Maloney.
The Jameson family had long left the Sinclairs far behind.
Inside the office.
Maloney sat on the sofa, his expression ice-cold.
Sebastian pushed the door open and walked in; he had been in a meeting when his secretary rushed in to announce Maloney's arrival, prompting him to temporarily suspend the meeting and hurry back.
Given Maloney's current status, others always sought him out; for him to personally condescend to visit, something massive must have happened.
Sebastian didn't dare delay for a moment.
"Is there a problem with the project?"
"Mr. Sinclair," Maloney said, his face dark as he lifted his gaze to Sebastian, keeping his words concise. "From today onward, do not let Seraphina appear in my sight again."
Sebastian assumed Seraphina had done something to pester Maloney again.
And deeply annoyed him.
"I'll remind her," Sebastian said with a slight nod.
"Sebastian," Maloney tapped his index finger against the armrest of the sofa. "If I see her again, the partnership between our two families is terminated."
Sebastian's expression tightened.
The Sinclair and Jameson families had been close for generations; the two grandfathers had a life-and-death bond, and their fathers were inseparable friends.
But by the time it came to Sebastian and Maloney, although they grew up together, their relationship wasn't exactly warm—at best, they were familiar friends.
First, Maloney was far too outstanding, and a class divide had gradually formed between them.
Second, Sebastian had moved out of The Gated Community in middle school, so during the prime years for cultivating friendship from middle school to college, they were separated, naturally causing their bond to fade.
Third, Maloney and Sebastian had once had a falling out.
In short, while they had been best friends in the past, today they could only barely be considered business partners with some shared history.
Little genuine affection remained.
Sebastian had clearly realized this too.
As Maloney stood up to leave, Sebastian chased after him and asked, "Mr. Jameson, can you give me a reason?"
A reason?
Maloney had no intention of dragging Nora into this.
Nora was too soft-hearted; Seraphina had helped her in the past, and she would let herself be dragged down over a tiny debt of gratitude.
"Just looking at her annoys me," Maloney said flatly.
That sentence successfully shut Sebastian up.
Maloney turned and left.
Pushing open the office door, he found Seraphina standing outside.
It was unclear how much she had heard. She tilted her head up, biting her lower lip, a trace of stubbornness on her face as she demanded indignantly, "Maloney, what right do you have to be annoyed by me?"
Maloney's brows instantly furrowed.
"We used to be so close."
Seraphina took a step forward. "When I scraped my knee, you cared for me and took me to the hospital. Every holiday, you were the one who drove me from the old house to the new one."
"I went abroad to study for you, and now that I've become an outstanding woman, why won't you even speak to me?"
"I know you're married, and I know your marriage was an accident. I never wanted you to cheat, I just..."
"Who said my marriage was an accident?" Maloney interrupted coldly.
That wasn't an accident.
It was a deliberate conquest.
