Maloney refused to back down until he got an answer.
Nora stubbornly tried to logic her way out. "I'm incapable of learning how to swim."
"Assume you're a natural prodigy."
"I'm physically weak. I couldn't drag either of you out."
"Assume you possess superhuman strength."
"Then I'll save both of you."
"We're a hundred yards apart. You only have time for one."
"I'll call the police."
Maloney tightened his grip around her waist. "So you'd just watch us drown?"
Nora deadpanned, "If you both drown, I'll just jump in with you."
Maloney was clearly not satisfied with that answer.
His expression darkened as he issued a low threat.
"Think very carefully about your next words."
Nora snuggled deeper into his chest.
Honestly, compared to answering these ridiculous questions, she'd rather let him have his way in the bedroom a few more times.
Nora let out a soft whimper.
Maloney's eyelids fluttered.
He didn't move, completely allowing her to maneuver herself into him. His voice dropped to a husky whisper. "Hypothetically, if Cassidy and I both broke our legs, who would you take care of first?"
Nora mumbled, "Can't you imagine a scenario where nobody gets hurt?"
Maloney gave her a sharp squeeze. "Answer the question."
Nora caught her breath. She inhaled deeply and whispered, "I'd take care of you first."
Maloney added a condition. "Assume we're stranded on a deserted island. There's no one else around, and definitely no housekeepers."
Nora was speechless.
*Seriously, can we get one positive hypothetical?!*
"I'll take care of both of you at the same time."
"You have to choose one."
"I'll put you both in the same room and take care of you together."
"Men and women need boundaries."
"Is saving lives more important, or are your Victorian boundaries more important?"
"Fine, we're in the same room. But you still have to prioritize who gets treated first."
Nora fell utterly silent.
She completely refused to entertain this childish game anymore.
Maloney pinched her sides relentlessly until she finally relented with an exasperated sigh. "I'll take care of whoever is hurt worse!"
