"If you ever feel overwhelmed, bite my ring finger," Maloney offered, raising his left hand to her lips.
The finger adorned with his wedding band.
The cool metal brushed against her chin.
"Try it," he prompted softly.
She had no idea what game he was playing.
She opened her mouth, closed it, stared at the finger, opened her mouth again, and hesitated.
His gaze darkened, his voice dropping to a gravelly command. "Bite me."
Yielding, she lightly sank her teeth into his knuckle.
"Good girl," he praised, petting her hair. "Now, give me a word."
"What kind of word?"
"A word you despise."
"Huh?"
"Something that instantly kills the mood."
What kind of bizarre interrogation was this?
"Why do I need a word for that?" she asked, thoroughly confused.
He wound a lock of her hair around his finger, gently tugging it loose with the coaxing patience of a handler soothing a feral cat. "Just pick one."
Still clueless, but entirely obedient, she thought for a second before offering, "Seraphina Sinclair."
Maloney fell silent.
That would definitely kill any mood imaginable.
"We'll go with that, then."
"But what is it for?"
"When things get too intense, use one of those to tell me to stop."
He pinned her against the velvet cushions, and it wasn't until the third time he took her that she finally realized what the safeword was for.
He refused to let her off the couch.
He refused to listen to a single excuse.
He was usually so controlled.
Now, he was ravenous.
Overwhelmed, her knees buckled, and she instinctively kicked out at him. But her struggles were as weak as a kitten batting at string, and he easily caught her ankle against his hip.
"Maloney!"
She gasped.
She couldn't find her leverage.
He had never been this dominant with her before.
Tears immediately pricked her eyes.
To make matters worse, whenever he took a breather, he ensured she remained entirely at his mercy.
She lost track of time.
