The widow was pregnant.
The scandal exploded instantly.
Unable to handle the vicious neighborhood gossip, the widow eventually miscarried.
Rumor had it that the baby had been a boy.
After that incident, Nora's father practically never came home.
Whether Nora lived or died, no one cared anymore.
She used to call for "Mom and Dad." Then it was just "Dad." Eventually, she stopped calling for either of them entirely.
The dream violently shifted back to the aftermath of the kidnapping. The terrified men confessed they had been hired by Bella. The furious neighbors condemned Bella's cruelty and demanded the police arrest her to protect the rest of the children in the neighborhood.
Nora stood silently in the corner, watching Vivian viciously fight the crowd to protect Bella.
She felt absolutely nothing.
The chaotic screaming slowly faded away.
The world plunged into total silence.
Nora's body gave a violent twitch.
She jerked awake, her eyes slowly fluttering open to absolute darkness. She instinctively tried to roll over to find a light switch, but a large hand firmly pinned her back against the mattress.
"You're awake?" Maloney's voice was thick with sleep.
Nora let out a soft "Mhm."
Maloney gently stroked her hair. "Do you want to get up and eat, or keep sleeping?"
"What time is it?" Nora whispered.
"Around one or two in the morning."
"Oh..."
"Or do you want to get up and listen to my explanation?"
Nora paused for a split second.
She reached out, tracing the lines of his face in the dark.
Once her fingers brushed his lips, she leaned in and kissed him.
The darkness was the perfect breeding ground for intimacy.
She could only see his silhouette, blind to the details; she could hear his racing heartbeat, completely disoriented in the shadows.
Nora's hands roamed freely until she found the hem of his dress shirt. She tried to yank it over his head, but when it wouldn't budge, her fingers quickly moved to undo his buttons.
Halfway through, Maloney's hand closed firmly around her wrist.
"Don't mess around," he murmured, his tone a helpless blend of exhaustion and utter indulgence.
"I'm not messing around," Nora whispered defensively.
Messing around?
Nora absolutely refused to believe that Maloney didn't want to mess around right now.
