The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 253

But tonight, with Maloney completely absent, she felt strangely unaccustomed to it.

It was probably the light.

Nora had left a single bedside lamp on for him.

The dim, amber glow seeped through her eyelids, impossible to ignore, and left her feeling inexplicably restless.

Nora sat up and switched off the lamp.

The bedroom was plunged into darkness, so dead quiet she could hear her own heartbeat.

Her exhausted body finally began to relax, and a wave of drowsiness crept up on her. Just as she was about to drift into sleep, a soft *click* echoed through the room.

The bedroom door had opened.

Though the movements were clearly cautious, the sound was piercingly loud in the silent room.

Nora was instantly wide awake.

She hadn't fallen into a deep sleep yet, and with all the lingering thoughts already crowding her mind, her brain snapped to full alertness.

Nora curled up slightly, burying her head beneath the covers, and pretended to be fast asleep.

She waited for a long time, but no lights flipped on, nor did she feel the mattress dip.

Where was he?

Nora slowly peeled her eyes open and peeked halfway out of the blankets. A towering shadow instantly filled her blurry vision.

Maloney was standing right beside the bed. His massive silhouette completely eclipsed the headboard. She couldn't read his expression in the dark, but the overwhelming, predatory aura radiating off him was impossible to miss.

Nora was speechless.

He had nearly scared her to death!

She grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him.

One wasn't enough to vent her frustration, so she threw several more in rapid succession.

If there was one thing her bed had plenty of, it was pillows. Whenever Maloney woke up earlier than her, he used to build a fortress of them around her. Between the two of them, they had six regular pillows and eight throw pillows stacked across the headboard.

Maloney caught the barrage of pillows, tossing them to the foot of the bed. Seeing that Nora had no intention of stopping, he reached out, shackled her wrists, and pressed her firmly into the mattress.

"I'm sorry, Nora. I'm late."

"Late is late, but why were you hovering over my bed trying to give me a heart attack?"
