Yates scowled, took a few jagged breaths, and picked up the plastic cup to take a swig.
He didn't notice anything off about it.
He kept venting, "Do you have any idea what I've been going through? No one will even listen to me! I funneled millions into Mr. and Mrs. Smith's company, and they actually turn around and bite the hand that feeds them! I... Ugh, Nora, forget all that. Just take me to see Valery."
"Yates," she said softly. "Do you actually like Valery?"
His face went rigid. "Let's not talk about that..."
"Answer me first," she interjected smoothly. "Tell me the truth, and then I'll decide if I'm taking you."
He sucked in a breath, hesitated for a agonizing second, and finally admitted, "I love Jasmine."
"Then why did you kiss Valery?"
"I didn't..."
"Are you really going to lie to my face too?" she interrupted again.
Looking at Nora's serene face—so impossibly gentle, looking as if she would validate and save him no matter what horrible things he confessed—Yates suddenly felt inexplicably emboldened.
He finally cracked. "Valery kissed me first..."
"She told me she was jealous of Jasmine's perfect health. She wanted Jasmine to be trapped at home with her forever. Whatever Jasmine liked, she wanted. Whoever Jasmine loved, she wanted too. She made me kiss her..."
"I admit, I lost my mind for a second..."
"But you have to believe me, Jasmine is the only one in my heart."
Nora's clear eyes stared unblinkingly at him. She parted her lips, paused slightly, and delivered the killing blow: "Did you sleep with her?"
Every muscle in Yates's face paralyzed.
He dodged the question entirely, deflecting instead. "Nora, don't listen to the internet trolls. I'm not an animal. Valery is way too fragile for that."
"I know I got too close to her, but I only ever treated her like Jasmine's older sister. I was just worried about her health. I didn't have any malicious intentions. I just wanted everyone to be happy..."
Yates kept rambling out excuses.
But Nora hadn't even specified *who* he slept with.
He slipped into the defensive role awfully fast.
Judging by his visceral panic.
He absolutely had.
