"There are security cameras in my studio!" Nora gasped, both shocked and flustered.
"Then we'll just watch the footage ourselves," Maloney replied smoothly.
Nora was speechless.
Maloney tossed her onto the plush sofa, caging her in by planting his hands on either side of her body.
"Maloney." She shrank back slightly, softening her tone. "Stop messing around. I have an interview scheduled for this afternoon."
He leaned down to press a kiss to her cheek, his voice a low rumble. "I'll interview them for you."
"You don't know anything about this."
"You think I don't know how to conduct an interview?"
"No, I mean I'm interviewing for a design-related role. You aren't familiar with the industry."
"It's all the same."
"It's completely different," Nora said, poking his solid chest with her index finger. "I'm not like you. You run a massive corporate empire, and your schedule only features the names of top executives. The majority of the employees at your firm are just replaceable cogs in a giant machine. A single decision you make in a top-floor boardroom can dictate their entire work trajectory for the next three months."
"But my studio is different. Every single one of my employees is a vital component that keeps this small machine running. I can't afford to lose a single one. Not only do I need them to have exceptional skills, but I also need their personalities to mesh perfectly with mine. That's why I have to talk to them myself."
She spoke with absolute sincerity, yet there was a deliberate softness to her voice that sounded almost like she was coaxing him.
It finally felt like they had found a slice of their usual dynamic again.
"Fine." Maloney pulled her up from the sofa. "Want some cake?"
Nora nodded eagerly. "Yes."
The boba and the cake had been left behind in the car.
He stepped out to fetch them.
A few moments later, they were curled up together on the sofa, sharing the slice of Tiramisu.
Neither of them brought up the fight from last night or the bickering from this morning.
It was an unspoken truce.
For some inexplicable reason, they had been constantly at each other's throats over the silliest things these past two days.
