Of course she understood.
She had pieced the whole puzzle together minutes ago.
She could barely believe it at first, but then he had to go and spell out the entire plot out loud.
It was undeniably true.
But she just couldn't comprehend how he could have come up with such an absurd narrative.
Save herself? A fire alarm?
None of that was ever going to happen.
She had been drugged that night.
Caught completely off guard, she had chugged a glass of wine spiked with a heavy aphrodisiac.
The drug turned her muscles to jelly and left her completely weak, alongside its intended arousing effects.
But her mind was still perfectly sharp.
She felt disgusted and terrified. It wasn't some magical love potion that made her throw herself at the first man she saw; she still had her sanity.
Unfamiliar with the hotel's layout, she had simply dragged herself back the way she came, planning to take the elevator down to the crowded banquet hall.
It was a terrible plan.
She knew that.
But given the panic, managing to flee at all was a massive victory.
Her only thought was praying the elevator she just saw hadn't gone down yet. As soon as she got inside, she was going to smash the emergency button.
A fire alarm in the hallway? She didn't even think to look for one. Was there even one on that wall? Her vision had been completely blurred.
When she rounded the corner toward the elevators and slammed into Maloney, she had latched onto him without a second thought.
She had clung to him like a literal lifeline.
Her elevator plan was incredibly risky.
Maloney, however, was guaranteed safety!
But the moment she pressed against his chest, the drug in her system hit her like a freight train.
The way her body instinctively reacted to him made her want to die of shame.
So when he later offered to "help" her,
she naturally assumed it was entirely her fault for tempting him.
It was incredibly humiliating.
She had absolutely refused to ever bring it up again.
She had only confided in her closest friends about the mental turmoil.
Cassidy had wildly declared, "That's why you gotta just jump the guy you like! Who cares if he's into it at first? Cop a feel, steal a kiss. If you sleep with him, you win. Keep sleeping with him, and you just might bag him for life."
Which only made Nora feel worse.
She had always been thin-skinned.
Even when Maloney confessed he loved her before they married, she still felt like she had trapped him that night.
But the tables had completely turned.
He had been plotting to steal her way before she even bumped into him.
This was fantastic news!
