The Colonel’s Claim: After the Divorce novel Chapter 10

...

Commercial flights were significantly slower, and it wasn't until past four in the afternoon that they finally landed in New York City.

The second they touched down, Clara rushed her parents straight to the hospital.

Registration, consultations, admission procedures... by the time the grueling gauntlet was finished, it was already six in the evening.

After reviewing the test results, the specialist grimly confirmed that Caleb's condition was critical.

"If possible, you should try to secure a consultation with Dr. Oliver."

Dr. Oliver was an absolute titan in the field of leukemia treatment.

But that also meant getting an appointment with him was near impossible; it required immense wealth and elite connections to even reach his receptionist.

Clara's heart sank to the floor.

"...Okay."

She committed the name to memory. After settling her parents into their ward, she stepped out into the hallway with her phone, planning to pull every string she had to find Dr. Oliver's contact information.

Pacing the corridor.

She stared at her phone, racking her brain for a solution.

Calling Richard was undoubtedly the fastest fix, but she hated the thought of worrying the elderly man.

Besides, she had already cashed in a massive favor; it felt completely inappropriate to beg for another one so soon.

Just as she resolved to call an old friend instead,

She looked up.

And was utterly blindsided by the sight of Dominic and Scarlett walking out of a VIP ward.

Scarlett had clearly been crying. Her eyes were rimmed red, and her radiant complexion looked somewhat pale and fragile.

Dominic wrapped a protective arm around her, pulling her close to let her rest her head on his shoulder. With a tender grace, his long fingers pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and gently wiped away her tears.

"Don't worry," he murmured in a velvet-soft voice. "I'll contact a few more top specialists to take a look at Martha shortly."

Witnessing this intimate display, all the blood drained from Clara's face. She stood paralyzed, her thumb pressing agonizingly hard against her phone screen.
