Pierce's gaze locked, his hands immediately dropping his silverware to grip Riley's shoulders. His tone was dead serious. "Don't ever ask a question like that again."

"Why not?"

"Because I don't like it. I am never divorcing you."

Riley thought perhaps he was worried about the optics. "If you're afraid a divorce will impact the company, I can fully cooperate to manage the fallout."

Pierce frowned, searching her face for any signs of an ulterior motive.

Realizing she had been a bit too blunt, Riley forced a laugh. "I was just joking with you. Did you actually take me seriously?"

His expression remained dark. "It wasn't funny. Don't ever say things like that. We promised each other we'd never walk away. Did you forget?"

Riley lowered her eyes. "So you still remember."

"Of course I remember."

A flash of bitter irony crossed her lowered gaze. When she looked back up, her eyes were filled with sorrow. "You've been ignoring me lately, and we're always fighting. I thought you'd forgotten all those promises."

So that was why she brought up divorce out of the blue.

Pierce visibly relaxed, his tone softening. "I haven't been ignoring you. I just wanted to give you some time to cool off. I was wrong to argue with you, but there is absolutely nothing going on between me and Seraphina. You keep fighting with me over her, and it makes me feel like you don't trust me at all. Isn't trust the most important thing in a marriage?"

If she hadn't known that Manager Walsh was actually Seraphina.

If she hadn't seen their explicit text messages with her own eyes.

His words might have actually made her reflect on herself. She might have wondered if she was wronging him, if she had completely misunderstood his relationship with Seraphina, or if she was just being too sensitive.

Riley had to admit, Pierce was a master of deception.

He could lie without blinking and smoothly turn the blame back on her.

"Yes, trust is the most important thing in a marriage. From now on, I won't interfere with your professional dealings with Seraphina. But you have to promise me you won't lie to me. If something happens, tell me. I don't want to look like a fool kept in the dark."

Riley put on a hopeful, vulnerable expression as she spoke.

"I promise." Pierce let go of her. "Eat up, before the food gets cold."

Riley offered a self-deprecating smile. What was she hoping for?
