Riley paused on the steps. Talk about what?
About how he deeply regretted protecting her from Seraphina?
About the phantom manager calling him in the middle of the night?
Or about how deeply he was still emotionally entangled with his ex?
There was absolutely no point in having that conversation anymore.
She already knew the sickening truth. She just needed physical proof.
And to get that proof...
She didn't need him.
She could find it herself.
He was a master manipulator. If she confronted him now, he would just feed her more elaborate lies, spinning logical excuses to gaslight her into doubting her own sanity.
He would drag her into an endless cycle of toxic paranoia and emotional exhaustion.
She refused to live like that. She was going to rip the blindfold off and stare the truth right in the face.
"I'm exhausted. We'll talk another time," Riley said, and continued up the stairs without looking back.
She stepped into the nursery first to check on her daughter, accidentally waking Mrs. Gable in the process.
The nanny sat up, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "Mrs. Landon, are you sleeping in here tonight?"
Riley had fully intended to sleep separately from Pierce from now on, but now...
She hesitated for a second. "No. Go back to sleep."
Mrs. Gable smiled brightly, assuming Riley was finally returning to her husband's bed. "Alright. Don't worry, I'm a light sleeper. I'll take good care of the baby."
Riley nodded and walked over to the master bedroom. When she pushed the door open, she found Pierce sitting on the edge of the bed.
