No wonder Sebastian was the first to enter; he was the one who had saved her and her daughter.
Riley's heart swelled with boundless gratitude.
Not long after, hurried footsteps echoed outside, and soon Pierce appeared at the doorway. He stared at Riley, whose face was completely drained of color, his bloodshot eyes brimming with guilt and remorse.
Mrs. Gable tactfully left the room.
Riley watched as Pierce limped toward her. When he stopped by her bed, she simply stared at him without saying a word.
Pierce's throat bobbed. "Riley, I'm sorry."
Tears instantly welled up in Riley's stinging eyes, but she forced them back, refusing to let them fall. "Why did you lie to me?"
Pierce sat on the edge of the bed and reached for her hand, but she pulled it away before he could touch her.
His hand froze in midair before he pulled it back. "Ethan went overseas for a project. Before he left, he entrusted his sister and nephew to me, asking me to look after them for a while. I didn't mean to lie to you. You were so close to giving birth, and I just didn't want to upset you."
"You didn't want to upset me, so you thought you could treat me like a fool and lie to me?"
"I know how much she hurt you in the past, and I knew you still resented her. I was terrified that telling you the truth would affect you and the baby. I didn't dare take the risk. But Ethan and I grew up together. I couldn't just ignore his request."
Pierce looked at her, his face riddled with guilt. "Riley, I'm sorry for making you suffer."
"So that night, when you rushed out in the middle of dinner and ignored everything I said, it was because you got a call from Seraphina?"
"Her son was born prematurely and has always been frail. He spiked a high fever that night and was in critical condition. Any delay could have cost his life."
A flicker of surprise crossed Riley's mind at the revelation of the premature birth, but it was quickly overshadowed by the crushing pain in her heart.
Her suspicions were correct. Pierce had never gone on a business trip. He had spent the last few days at the hospital with Seraphina and her son.
He had time to be with another woman and her child, but no time to be with his own wife and daughter.
